My name is Brandy Williams and I need your help. On November 2nd, 2006 I came across and email asking to save the life of the Pit Bull/Lab Mix who was very pregnant or she would be put down on November 5th. I immediately called down to the King William Pound in Virginia and spoke with the receptionist. She informed me that those details were correct.
Here is the Pounds ad on PetFinder.com:
“Notes: KW6526- This is a VERY PREGNANT pitbull/lab mix girl. She is shy, and about ready to POP! She is about 50lbs and 2yrs old. She will need a rescue by Nov. 5th. We would love for her to be released early, so that she can have her puppies in a nice warm home. These puppies are coming any day now. Please call the King William Veterinary Clinic to rescue this girl and her puppies at 804-769-3200.”
At that time I spoke with my sister, Brit Basham, who has contacts at the SPCANova and various rescue groups in the area, and told her we needed to help. My husband and I called back Friday, Nov. 3rd and spoke to “Whitney”. We said we wanted the dog and would be there Saturday to pick her up. At that time we paid the $25.00 adoption fee so that no one else could take the dog before we got there. She said that I just had to pick her up by 12:00pm on Saturday. We then went and spent $200 on supplies for the mom and the birth. We also had already talked to a No-Kill adoption shelter that was going to help us place the pups once they were weaned.
When we arrived at the King William pound on Saturday around 11:45 the receptionist greeted us and when I told her who I was she started talking about someone else calling and picking up the dog. She excused herself and Dr. John Haile came into the waiting room and said “We are not releasing her to you!!!” Of course myself, my husband and my sister asked why and he said “Because we had a series of calls saying that you are involved in dog fighting.” At that point we were in shock and asked the who, why and what is going on. Dr. Haile became extremely rude and abrasive and kept repeating over and over that we were involved in dog fighting. He had no proof and wouldn’t say who had told him this or even give us a chance to defend ourselves. He then begin flaleing his arms in the air and saying “you aren’t getting the dog”. He kept saying that he didn’t owe us any explanation and he wouldn’t be investigating anything. Still stunned, hurt and humiliated we left. Besides being slammed with these alegations, the worst part is that now she is laying in a cold cage, scared and about to give birth to puppies all alone when she could be in a warm comfortable home being monitored and assisted in any way necessary.
As I type this I received an email letting me know more about this issue. Someone apparently called the clinic and reported us, then reposted an emergency rescue for this girl. My sister and I have written emails to this person Dana, who works at the clinic, as well as the other people she sent the email to accusing of us being with a dog fighting ring. My sister and I have received a few emails already defending our position. It seems as though there are dog watchers out there that try and prevent people from adopting dogs out for fear that they will use to them for fighting. My problem is that they are descriminating against us without giving us a chance to defend ourselves. They have put mine and my sisters name out there with false information attached to it. My sister has adopted/rescued two American Bulldogs and Rottweilers, so she has a love for the misunderstood breeds. She would rescue every animal if she could, but she’s one person. Now her name is out there, as well as our families name, and we may never be able to save another animal again.
What are we to do now? I’m reaching out to everyone of you to offer some type of advice on what we can do now? What steps can we take? We still would like to help this dog, if she hasn’t already been euthanized.
Please help us and her!
