Eye Goop

What else can cause eye goop besides food? (Or whatever you call it... eye boogers? I wish I knew a real term for this! LOL!)

I ask because Morgan has had some serious eye goop for the past week... maybe even two weeks. I didn't think much of it at first, because (1) goop happens, and (2) he had snuck upstairs the previous day and eaten a bowl of crappy cat food (what my brother feeds his cat, not what mine eat).

However, it has now persisted for this length of time with no repeat cat food offenses, so I wonder... what is going on? It does not seem to be bothering him any, but wiping his face every couple of hours is just getting old to me. He's never been goopy before.

Any thoughts? Advice?

He is going to the vet today for a booster anyways, so I will ask them about it while I'm there, too.

Could be an infection, could be he got something in his eye. What colour is the discharge?

Pit got some serious sand in his eyes once and it took a few days of excessive eye discharge to get it all out. It was all back to normal after that.

Aha! Discharge! I knew there was a real word for what I was trying to describe...

Anyways, the discharge (or "goop" ) is usually brown and looks like lint until I wipe it off. Sometimes it is white-ish.

Hm well that's probably not an infection; that's typically greeny/grey or yellow. But since he's producing lots of it, it's worth asking the vet when you're there of course.

We don't have any flowers blooming in our yard, but it is that time of year. My vet thinks that Morgan is just having some seasonal allergies. We are to watch out for redness/irritation around his eyes and make an appointment if it persists. For now, though, he's fine. Just seasonal runny eyes.

Don't know why I didn't think of allergies. I know that MINE have been acting up the past two weeks, so it probably should have occurred to me.

Do you have a recommendation for dosing Benadryl to a dog? I know that it's very common (my mom's old dog, Cody, used to take Benadryl for his allergies), but I am paranoid about overdosing meds!

Also, I only have generic Benadryl in my house right now... is that okay?


Morgan is actually doing fine right now. Not much goop at all yesterday. A little more today, but not as thick as it has been. Still, I'd like to know how to dose Benadryl for future reference!

Yes, Children's Benadryl is good for dog allergies. Just make sure than you give the correct dose - whatever is written on the box and lower dose fro smaller breeds.

Children's benadryl is for CHILDREN.. therefore the dose on the box has nothing to do with dogs...

It will give you an idea of how much to give your dog and not overdose. It works very well in dogs with allergies.

No. Please check with your vet (anyone reading this) Humans and canines metabolize things differently. What I have had recommended to me from vets and experienced dog people has no bearing on what it says on the box.

Sorry I didnt see your question yesterday.

I had been told by the vet 1/2 a tablet but that was for an 8 lb dog, so no idea what the dosage would be on a larger dog.

But I would only use it for a short time, if the allergy seems to be really bad.
