So I got accepted to the Irish National Stud on a student program. This means moving to Ireland in September and staying for about a year. How hard would it be to import Emma and No Name into ireland? Anyone know the steps or were I could find out.

Now I know Ear Croping is illegal in the UK, but if no Name has her ears done here, then can I show her in the UK with croped ears?

I dont know if Im going or not. The dogs is just ONE thing i have to take into consideration.

No, you may not show a cropped dog at any UK shows. Ear cropping has been banned there since before 1900.

I've no idea of the importation laws, but they are very stringent since the UK is rabies free. It used to be a 6 month quarantine, so you need to do some good research.

Can I bring my pets to Ireland?
If you want to bring pets (cats and dogs) with you to Ireland you should know that on the arrival they have to be put in quarantine for a period of 6 months. The only exemption from this rule are pets coming from Great Britain, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, and this is only because the laws of these countries on the import of pets are quite similar to the Irish. There is only one quarantine centre in the Republic of Ireland and, as you can imagine, the demand for it is quite high. So, if you are coming here on holidays or moving to Ireland for a longer period of time, and you want to bring your pet with you, check the availability and book well in advance.

The address is Lissenhall, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland, Tel: + 353 1 840 1776 Fax: + 353 1 840 9338. Costs for keeping your pet in the quarantine for 6 months will differ depending on the size of the animal.

It is important that you read the information contained in Department of Agriculture and Food site at http://www.irlgov.ie/daff/quarcont.htm. The UK is changing it quarantine laws at the moment and this will almost certainly affect the quarantine laws in Ireland. This site will keep you up to date with any changes, or contact:

The Department of Agriculture and Food,
Kildare Street,
Dublin 2.

Tel: (01) 6072000 - Veterinary Division: (01) 6072862

I'd start here and work my way through the site:
http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/index.jsp?file=pets/intro.xml

It looks like there are 3 options:
1. 6 mo. quarantine (sp?) with, most likely, at least 1 rabies vax during that time.

2. 1mo. quarantine at their facility and 5 mo. at an approved private facility

3. EU passport. This involves: 1. being from an accepted country 2. starting at least 7 mo. in advance (getting vax, getting titers etc) 3. other requried vet stuff. :)

Good Luck

I just recieved my pet passport for Casey on Tuesday which will enable me to take her to approved countries in and out of the EU. It took a while to get it as we had to wait 6 months ( i think about that length) after her blood test. As long as you follow the rules about vaccines, microchipping ect and use the approved routes in and out of the UK you will be fine. I got a pet passport as in my gap year in a few years i hope to do a bit of traveling with her.

You've got enough time if you did decide to go down the pet passport route anyway.

Take your time deciding whats best for you and your dogs. If you do decide to go to the National Irish Stud, goodluck and have fun:D.
