Flirtpole and tennis ball w/launcher will knock off some energy. Walks are pointless, except as a change of scenery.

When we had Charlie we were lucky to live on saltwater. We'd take him swimming for about an hour every day and play fetch on the waterfall after that. It was a sheer 30 foot wall that he loved running up and down over and over. After that he liked hunting for quail in the bushes along the north side of the pasture.

Swimming is excellent exercise too, I wish the borzois liked it better because it did amazing things for Charlie's muscle tone.

Swiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimming every chance we get. Can't beat it.

Running (both on and off lead), hiking, walking, silly games, fetch, field work, agility/obedience...

Then there's mental exercise as well...

Mya (my parents GSD) is REALLY high energy, but fairly low drive imho
She's SO strong, too.

We've been playing "Hide and Seek" and the come game. My brother is upstairs on his computer, and I'm downstairs in my room. We'll take turns calling her, she runs up the stairs and gets a few pats and a good girl (all she needs :D VERY praise motivated) and then runs down and across the house to my room. Sometimes I slip stuff under her collar to take up to him :rofl1:

but I have a problem with her because she doesn't like to play ball, fetch, or tug or anything like that. And she has HORRIBLE leash manners :eek: so she has to be tired out before walking... and THATs hard to do.

* I give plenty of opportunity to explore different surroundings, but only with a chaperone. If I cannot chaperone, I confine play and exploration in the backyard.
* If I work all day, I hire a neighbor, a teenager who likes animals, or a pet sitter to play with pets about halfway through the day so that pent-up energy won’t spill over into the evening.
* Training is very important and effective to get off excess energy - obedience class, agility class.
* plenty of toys!!!

:D
