Alrighty, I've just about had it with worms (of any kind, really, but more importantly the ones that are in my pup's poo!). I just had him de-wormed for the millionth time last month. I just don't get it! He's been on Frontline since we got him in April, and I try to keep the backyard as clean as possible! How does this happen? The only time he doesn't play in the backyard is when I take him to the park in our housing complex. I know other dogs play there, so maybe I should stop taking him? That would really suck. :( I've seen stuff about a preventative that he can take...how much does that cost? I guess I'll be making another trip to the vet...Also, the worms weren't moving at all. They just seemed to be hanging out. Does that make a difference? The last time he had worms they were all wrigly and ugh. Thanks guys.

Are you dealing with tapeworms? The ones that look like sesame seeds or rice pieces?

There are two different types of tapeworms and you don't have to go to the vet to treat them everytime. Make sure you use monthly flea control and if Frontline isn't working for you, try Advantage.

Tapeworms come from ingesting flea eggs or eating rodents and small animals and birds.

If you want to treat at home, then you can purchase an over-the-counter dewormer called "Safeguard dewormer or just look for a dewormer that is fenbendazole. This type of dewormer gets rid of the tapes they get from small animals and it also kills almost all other types of intestinal worms as well. To treat the tapes they get from fleas you can purchase an over-the-counter dewormer called "Tradewinds" dewormer. It's active ingredient is praziquantel. Use them both as directed and they should take care of the problem. I usually order online.

Make sure your dogs is not eating poop!

I will tell you that the reason I am recommending the above dewormers is because they are the extact same dewormers that the vets use (same active ingredients) and they are cheaper. I worked in a vet clinic for 5 years and the above dewormers are exactly what we prescribed, only an over-the-counter version.

Good luck.

Between Interseptor and K9 Advantix I haven't had worms for years ..... if you are not on flea prevention, I'd say it is tape worm .

He's on Frontline...has been since we rescued him in April. :) They look like little white pieces of rice...tubular. And again, not moving. Weird. Anywho, there's the info on the poo! :)

Yes, you can use both wormers at the same time AND you do not have to know what type of worm it is, but what you are describing is tapeworm. The wormers are safe and they are the same ingredient as the prescription from your vet. I did all my comparing/researching of them while I still worked at the clinic. The prescriptions the vets prescribe are drontal, cestex, panacur, droncit and pyrantel. The active ingredient in drontal (the part that takes care of the tapes is praziquantel) that is the same active ingredient in Tradewinds dewormer. Panacur which is prescibed by the vet is the exact same dewormer as Safeguard dewormer (active ingredient is fenbendazole.) You can pay the vet prices if you want, but these products ARE the same and they are safe if used according to label instructions. I routinely deworm my dogs about every six months and use both of these regularly even if they don't have worms. I have never seen any side effects or problems.

Here is a link to get Safeguard for free: http://www.safe-guard-for-dogs.com/ecards/index.asp

Here is a link where you can find them both, but many online pet suppliers sell them: http://www.dresslersdog.com/wormers.html

You are awesome! Thank you so much!!!

Just remember, that the Tradewinds dewormer is most likely the one that will take care of the type of tapeworms your dog has. Tradewinds gets rid of the tapes caused by fleas and Safeguard gets rid of the tapes caused by rodents...and it gets rid of almost all other intestinal worms as well.

Good luck to you...

We were just getting rid of hte flea problem and then I noticed the "spanish rice" (which I can no longer eat rice of any kind *shudder*) UGH! You'll get rid of 'em though!

A real GROSS story !!! Years ago our cat Minou got sick and had a really high fever ....we vetted her and after a couple of days ... the vet thought she'd be happier at home .. It was mid winter and VERY cold. She was an inside/outside cat and never had a litter box , so when she asked, I'd let her out . Went with her and when she did her business a foot long dead tape worm was hanging out of her butt ! I pulled it out with paper toweling ! UGH!! She must have been about 10 at the time and lived to be over 20 .
