March 18, 2013 – Natural Pet Products has confirmed it is recalling four of its most popular brands of dry dog food due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.
Brands being recalled include:

EVO
Innova
California Natural
HealthWise
The company plans to issue a more detailed statement sometime later today.
As soon as this information has been posted, we will immediately update this page.
You can report complaints about FDA-regulated pet food products by calling the consumer complaint coordinator in your area.
Or go to http://www.fda.gov/petfoodcomplaints.
Someone I convinced to switch from EVO messaged me this today and said "don't even say I told you so!" :p

I wouldn't panic at all but then all my animals are healthy and salmonella wont hurt them. In fact my cat catches mice all the time so I KNOW he's getting salmonella in his diet on weekly basis lol.

It's only certain lot numbers. If you aren't sure, return your bag to the store you got it from.

(Or post it here. I have the list and can verify it for you.)

Yeah, the salmonella problem is mostly for the people handling the dog food who might not then wash their hands and thus contract salmonella themselves.
Wash your hands after feeding your doggies, people!!

Not horribly uncommon, salmonella happens in food plants... just look at how many human salad mixes are recalled for the same thing. =P I wouldn't necessarily say it's got anything to do with the P&G buyout. Not that I'm in any hurry to go back to feeding any of 'em, but it's nothing super alarming IMHO...

Salmonella is really running rampant these days isn't it lol. I feel like the list of what ISN'T being recalled is much smaller compared to the list of what is recalled.

I kind of wonder if they have just developed better tests for it.

Yep, the biggest risk is to the humans handling it. Not a huge deal for the dogs. They can get salmonella, but not as easily or as severely as humans do. Wash your hands after feeding, and it probably won't really matter whether you have a contaminated batch. (unless there is an immuno-compromised human in the house! Do not take chances with that!)

One of my FB friends posted about this with the comment "feed raw!" I pointed out that raw food could contain salmonella too.

The amount of random food stuffs that are showing up contaminated with salmonella is a bit alarming. I suspect the only way to actually avoid it is to entirely grow and produce your own food. For both humans and pets.

They released a statement, and it was only testing positive on ONE lot of cat food, but the rest is being recalled voluntarily as a precaution. And I would like to note, Enda got horridly sick on a later recalled lot of TotW, so dogs can get sick from it although it's probably not as common as say a child or immune compromised person who might be handling the food. For the most part, you should always treat all food with some caution anyway, wash hands, bowls, spoons, surfaces, etc. They just had a recall recently of a lot of Honest Kitchen because a lot of their supplied parsley had tested positive for Salmonella. I'm just wondering to know though, why all these cases of Salmonella all of the sudden? Is it an outbreak of a new invasive strain? Or are they just now testing more stringently in the pet food market? I'm thinking the latter is more likely.

It does seem crazy lately... (even with human food). I dunno!
