I saw this on my deck this afternoon, so I took pics of it and looked up what it is. Its a female dobson fly. Males are bigger with bigger pincers. Yes I'm a geek. :D

And here's a cute caterpillar to even out the thread.

OMG what does it eat? Souls?! Also, the caterpillar looks like a tomato plant eater! Neat bugs though, as long as the fly isn't biting me, she's neat looking!

Umm.. I think I am weird.. I found the 'cute' caterpillar more disturbing than the alien looking fly!

LOL

Actually not too much is known about the adult stage. From what I read, they just reproduce and die.

Its a Green Oak Caterpillar, so says Google. It turns into a green moth.

ETA: I wonder if Kafka modeled his "The Metamorphosis" after the dobson fly? :p

Am I the only one that thinks the caterpillar looks like a green penis?
On my screen it looks like a blue penis.:lol-sign:

That fly would have me running around and screaming frantically.
OMG.
EW.
It looks like it could take off fingers with those pincers.
EEEK.
