Hi all!

Does anyone have any experience with English Shepherds? We've been researching the breed and are thinking of getting a puppy soon. I'd be interested in hearing first hand anecdotes and specific health information that may not be found in typical breed descriptions.

Thanks!

Lovely dogs. Somewhere between a Collie, a BC, and an Aussie in tempermant- and where exactly on that continum they fall can vary a LOT with the lines. Nice workers, quick learners, at least for farm work- I've never seen 'em anywhere else. Seemed to be problematic finding breeders who screen everything I would like to see screened on them. There are at least a few puppy mills out there on the net who have them, unfortunately, and the ES people I have talked to recently are very unhappy about UKC's appropriation of the breed.

That's one of my future dog breeds (next dog or the next after), there's actually a fair amount of breeders in Ohio.

From what I've read, they're primarily farm dogs, unlike BCs and Aussies which you see EVERYWHERE. So, you can expect a more "working" mentality because they're actual working dogs. They're supposed to be really great in dog sports like flyball and agility, and unless you own a farm, that's probably a good thing to get into so it has something to do.
