Hello,

My name is Ashton and I'm 20 years old. I've had 4 dogs in my life. I have 3 dogs, a cat (my Dad's cat, he's 14 years old but you'd never know it) and 2 guinea pigs.

I had my first husky when I was 5 and she lived for 8 years, dying of a unexplained seizure.

3-4 months later we bought Molly our first lab, who is currently 6 and loves to lay on the couch and sleep, she is very expressive and often 'talks' to us instead of using body language. She used her eyebrows and lips to tell us what she wants and often blinks as a response to questions.

When Molly was a puppy we decided that we needed to fill our 5000 sq ft yard and hide something with our 6.5 ft fence. So we rescued max, a 180 lb black lab that had been passed around from home to home in his 2 years of life. He is now 8 years old and apparently in the prime of his life! Molly is Max's queen, he will do anything for her and has the softest heart for his size. He often shows a paternal instinct with my two guinea pigs, licking him, putting his chin over them when we near and nudging blankets to cover them. He loves ANY attention and would never hurt a fly..unless it touches Molly.

When my Mom took a job 5 hours away and decided she needed the labs with her I decided that having no dog at all was not the way to go. I couldn't stand not having a dog in the house but I wanted something smaller that I could take with me wherever but train to be a dog not a person.
So while I was working as a groomer I decided on the right breed, A shih tzu.

Chewy is now 10 months old and will be a year old On January 21st, 2010. He is, I kid you not, The coolest shih tzu you will ever meet.

I currently work at Edmonton Humane Society's Dog day care, where I care for up to 50 dogs a day with my fellow collegues.
(Edmonton Humane Society | SPCA in Edmonton, Alberta | Adoptable Animals)

Because of growing up in the Groomers' Dog day care and with our labs, Chewy will not play with small dogs. He is honestly disgusted by them and tends to correct their behavior when they jump up on us without being invited or bark uncontrollably. He now has two best friends in Daycare which love to cuddle with him, chase him and play tug with him. He is NOT a small dog at heart. He often corrects great danes and english mastiff's if they're getting too 'rowdy'. He loves snow, he loves fetch, he loves wrestling and he loves 'Dino bones'. I taught him at an early age not to be a prince.

His list of tricks are never ending.
He can;
Back up, go belly up, count with his paws (i.e.- I tap the ground twice he taps the ground twice, I tap three times, he taps three times), sit in a bowl, balance on top of a bowl, Dance, Army walk (i.e.- When you lay on your belly and use your elbows you pull yourself forward) and point.

I tend to teach him new things when I get bored, or he gets bored. Anything and everything I think of I like to teach him, he's an easy learner and he makes me laugh while doing it. He is very food motivated so small kibble usually works best when it comes to teaching him new things.

So, therefor, Chewy is the coolest shih tzu ever. Although sometimes he annoys me as he tries to kill his rubber chicken and goes outside to bound in the snow and come in with a face CAKED in snow he is my dog and I'm his Human. When I move away from my parent's I'm definatly going to get more cats, more dogs and more guinea pigs. I'm just that type of person. I need animals in my life. They offer me way more then any human can.

Hello Ashton! Nice story you have there about your dogs -i especially like the one about Molly being Max's queen. What are your guinea pigs names?

My wife had the same sort of 'petting zoo' scene at her house when she was younger. Dogs, a cat, a parrot, two guinea pigs (Kirk and Spock) and 2 turtles (Esmeralda and Quasimodo).

I'm from the Philippines by the way! Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Well she sounds like me then, because I'll have alot of pets for sure.

Their names are Sugar and Ellie, they're both about 2-3 years old and I keep them in a Cubes and Coroplast cage of which I found on Guinea Pig Cages, Your Cavy At Home where I am also a member of the forums just like this. I rescued Ellie and unfortunatly bought Sugar before I even thought about looking at a shelter for a guinea pig.

Welcome! Sounds like you've got quite the zoo there but you're in good company. I alone have three snakes, a gecko, a cat, and a dog!

I have a soft spot for little dogs that think they're big dogs so any pictures of Chewy you have will be well loved :D
