Well, I have just spent a very long and sad afternoon at the vets. We rescued my St. Bernard when he was 10 months old (10 months ago). A few times he has shown some signs of lamness in his front left leg, but it has always disappeared after a couple of hours. Last night he started limping again and was no better this morning, so I managed to get him into the vet this afternoon. After alot of pulling, bending and general feeling around the vet did not have a very good prognosis. She believes that the poor boy has elbow dysplasia, and he has to get x-rays taken. The X-rays will better tell us the exact cause of the dysplasia, as apparently there are three things that contribute to dysplasia of the elbow. I am trying to educate myself the best I can on this joint disease, but any information or little tips would be so greatly appreciated.

He is my boy, I love him so much I'm willing to try anything. I would love any tips on homeopathic remedies to ease the pain when he is experiencing it, and alternative therapies that do not require invasive techniques. Of course, if he does require surgery he will get it, I am just hoping that maybe someone has any other suggestions to help us out.

Thanks everyone! His name is Hutch. He is a giant teddy bear! Right now we are trying to find an anti-inflamitory that won't upset his ultra sensitive stomach. Our vet put him on Ketoprophen yesterday but that is a no go, his poor belly doesn't like that. The hardest part is trying to restrict his activity level, he always wants to go everywhere with me. Saying no when I am just running out to the store to those big brown eyes is heart wrenching, my boyfriend says he just waits by the door like a pathetic lump waiting for me to come home. Once we have managed the swelling and reduce the pain he can go out for a couple easy walks a day. At 20 months he is still very much a puppy at heart so this is tough on him.

Has anyone ever tried hydotherapy with their dogs? Right now I am trying to find a place that will do this around here. I have heard a few success stories with other dogs and want to give it a try.
