Voodoo likes to sleep on tile and concrete. I've noticed that he's starting to get those awful, ugly, gray calluses on his elbows.

I've heard that dogs get these from laying on hard surfaces. I'm doing my best to encourage him to sleep on the carpet or on a blankie. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of these nasty things?

I haven't heard of a way yet. When we got Tira, she had little rough spots from laying on a concrete pad in the owners back yard. I don't know why since she had grass all around her, but...anyways. Once she was sleeping on carpet, blankies, the sofa and her dog bed they went away and the hair grew back. Now that she's "scooching" around on the floor playing with Gunner she's starting to get tiny hairless spots on her elbows again.
Once Gunner is bigger I'm pretty sure she'll stop scooching and be standing to play! :)

I don't know of any other way to get rid of them besides sleeping or laying on softer surfaces.

Foam mats in the crates... works every time. There's a guy who frequents the shows in my area that sells foam pads... I wish I knew his company name and website URL! I have two dobes aged 2.5 and 4.5, and neither have calluses... and these are shorthaired dogs!

Crates need more than just a blanket - they need extreme padding.

Charlie has those too. He is not confined to a crate at all. He has two soft beds to choose from, and alot of carpet. But he prefers the cool spots such as concrete, or hard floors. Rocket sleeps in the same spots as Charlie and she doesn't have any. He is heavier and not as agile though. I really don't see them as a big deal unless they are sore or abnormally big etc.
I have put softening cremes such as vasoline, but when they get soft they get red, I have found it best just to leave them alone. Charlie's have never been a problem for him, or me.:)
