My Norwich terrier has developed a taste for wood. When I take him to the park, he eats wood chips and chunks of tree bark. Then when he poops the
next day, we have a problem - he'll hunch over, then walk a few steps and
hunch over again because he can't push it out. This requires a manual
extraction, always fun especially with people walking by.

He doesn't seem to be any the worse for wear, but I'm concerned he's
gonna end up with a perforated intestine. He's pooped out pieces of
bark maybe two inches long and almost an inch wide.

Any ideas? Maybe I should dress him up as Paul Bunyan?

Thanks!

...Steve

I wouldn't let the dog offleash in an area with wood chips so the dog doesn't get that chance. If it is on a leash it's much easier to correct and take away... I'd trade for something edible possibly, or a ball, etc.

I 4th the keeping him on leash idea.

However, I've been thinking about something lately. If dogs eat stupid stuff like wood--will they ever figure out that it is causing constipation/diarrhea/etc? (No, they don't understand cause and effect, blah blah blah) I mean, surely wolf puppies do this from time to time but they don't have anyone there to restrict them.

Pual Bunyan. Ha ha ha ha ha. ^^ *giggles*

Whenever he runs for wood, distract him and keep him on leash.

Does he know "leave it" or "Drop it"? That might help. And I also agree with keeping him onleash with wood around.
