I expect I'm being hyper sensitive, having lived this for so long. But believe me, when you are watching your animal starve themselves to death, you let them eat whatever their hearts desire. I used to do research into my horse's feed just like we do for dogs and feed him only the best. These days, if he wanted Twinkies and Ho-Hos every day, he would get that.
This.

Not to be too rude, but don't even start to criticize until you've been there. I was feeding ice cream, chips, pretzels, cheese, and other junk to my cat to get him to eat something.

Puppy, I have no suggestions - only hugs and support. <3

Have you tried adding Cottage Cheese to her food? Soaking it in water? Try soaking it in water then adding strait raw meat.

Other than that I have no ideas.

We once gave Emma the stew we made for ourselves. It helped her out alot.

HUGS!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

Jen, I have tried adding snoek pate' (a kind of fish pate') she ate that with gusto for a few days then lost interest (she is raw fed). I cook mince and add that, same story, a few days of joy then nothing.

BUT! This morning she ate a bowl of Orijen and begged for more! I hope it lasts!!

I hope she continues to eat it! That would make things sooo much easier on you. Go Riley!

You said she liked liver treats... could you mix together a really stinky meal? Tripe, liver, salmon oil... mixed with some ground meat and bones? That may entice her.

Also, it's HARD to starve little dogs into eating. When blood sugar drops, they can go into a hypoglycemic state... so there's really only SO far you can go when it comes to "starving them out."

I'm really just curious as to the why. Why would she starve herself to the point od death? Does she dislike RC *that* much?

Since you're feeding liver treats, have you ever thought about adding a tiny tiny bit of raw liver/organ meat to her food everyday?

Wow she sounds absolutely 100% the same as Nia! Any new food she loooves for a few days then gets bored and refuses to eat it.

I'm so glad she's eating though! I hope it continues as well!

Oh, I hope the Orijen holds out for her! What a nice solution that would be. Tristan is just like you and Michiyo describe - I get a couple of weeks on a feed he will happily eat, then one day he is done with it, period. I then swap him cold-turkey to something else (try telling horse people you do that - they want to lynch you).

The other thing that was suggested to me that didn't work for us, but may be worth looking into, is fenugeek (think I spelled that correctly). It's supposed to work to improve appetite. My issue with it was that if I tried to put any supplements into Tristan's feed, he would refuse to touch it, even for several days after the bucket was cleaned out. So I never did get to see if it would work for him.

If Summer dislikes something enough she'll eat just barely enough to survive and no more. I find a lot of papillons (especially females) are finicky like that. Summer starved herself till she went hypoglycemic then it was just a vicious cycle- she stopped being hungry cause she was feeling so bad. Getting some nutrical and force fed wet food helped her.

Summer hates almost all kibbles we've tried and it took over a year and a half to get her on raw at all.

Hopefully it's just a case of finding a kibble she actually likes. :)

Maybe it could be the bowl you're using? I have heard of dogs not liking where the food is in. Just a thought. Hope all goes well.

She eats Royal Canine, I have just ordered her a bag of Orijen that is MASSIVELY expensive because it is imported but I will try anything at this point. :)

You said she eats RC...?? I mean I realize you've got a different food but your statement was, she's on RC. Which could be why people think that...

I'm sorry, I know this is a serious thread, but that made me LOL! Shepherd mix. :p

Have you tried green tripe? I recommend getting a can of it (if Solid Gold or any other company that cans it is available to you) or getting it fresh from a butcher/supplier. It smells absolutely HORRIBLE (like a meaty port o potty) and I have yet to meet a dog who doesn't devour it and anything that's with it. We had a GSD puppy come in to the pet hotel who was wasting away. He ate nothing for days. We called his owners, they said they could barely get him to eat, too. We had to take him to the Vet and get him on IVs to keep him alive. I brought in a few cans of green tripe, and he scarfed up anything that we mixed it with, and the owners were eternally grateful. It really is irresistable, and very nutritious! I wouldn't recommend feeding only green tripe, but you can probably mix that with ground raw or a premium kibble and get her to eat.

Have you tried all kinds of raw meats (pork is always a favorite)? Have you tried fish? Have you tried cooked meats? Like cooked ground beef? I would really try to work up her appetite... take her on little runs. Make her work for her food, doing Obedience and such. Some dogs will ignore food in a bowl, but will be eager for healthy, high value foods when they're made to work for it.

I know, goodness, relax. She was fed it, though, and you *just* changed her to Orijen (going by your post....). It was simple curiousity, so I posted. Maybe others are thinking the same thing? Maybe not. Doesn't really matter.

Seems you've got the problem under control any way. :)

Sounds like a crappy situation. I'm lucky Quinn is a pig and eventhough Buster doesn't love food, he's never refused to eat it. ALthought both Buster and Quinn have a constant itching that I can't find a reason for or fix, its so frustrating knowing they are stressed and I can't make it better.

I havn't got any suggestions, I just really hope she gets over it soon.

I don't have much to say other than good luck! I've been having some issues with Sawyer and eating; he's decided that tilapia is just not for him anymore, and regardless of how long I make him go between meals and only offer him that, it's just a no go. So we're taking that out of the rotation and adding back in fish oil pills. I need to switch up his rotation again anyway.

I did find, however, that I can get him to eat organs if they're frozen. He apparently just hates the texture of raw, room temperature liver, etc., he likes a bit of resistance or something. I'm just happy he'll eat it now and I don't have to sit there and make a spiced paté out of it, which sort of defeats the whole purpose of "raw".

I stated that she will eat it, not that she is fed it on a daily basis. I have stated over and over again in this thread that my dogs are raw fed.

I am perfectly relaxed. I would just prefer the perception that I feed crappy food to be nipped in the bud.

Now, back to the general news.

She is eating the Orijen, just not from a bowl and not in large amounts. I have to sit with a bowl of it and toss the pellets across the lounge. She will chase and eat between 5 and 10 pellets and then loose interest. I am doing this 3 times a day so I feel she is getting a reasonable amount to eat. She still gets he treats like some raw steak and a little cottage cheese. I will continue this until she has enough weight on to sustain some hunger.

I honestly think it is a stubbornness issue. I also think that there has been a lot of stress built up around her meal times and that has caused an issue. I think that by turning her meal times into a game we might break through.

Whatever works, right? :)
God I hope not! If this carries on for much longer I might kill her! :rofl1:

Oh, and I have some green tripe in the freezer, I just have to work up the courage to defrost it! LOL
