Yeah, no sweat, I'll break out the old laptop later and check my bookmarks.

From what I have read/watched myself it is a learning behavior, monkey see, monkey smell, monkey mimic.
Thanks that would be interesting. Almost everything I have seen shows they have VERY limited abilities to learn just by watching. (unless trained to do so)

So far with my dogs I have never seen an example of monky see monkey do. I have seen dogs learn that when one dog does X they will get rewarded if they do X too.

Ie take a puppy and have another dog do downs in front of it 10 times and feed the dog. See if the puppy is more likely to offer a down than it was before... Dogs do learn from other dogs, but I dont' think its just by watching, esp when there are no rewards handy. My dogs watch Dekka climb the fence, yet none of my others try to climb it no matter how badly they want out.

My friend's have an unfixed German Shepherd Dog, who is 4 years old, and he didn't lift his leg until he was 2 years old. He still squats more than he lifts his leg.

Yup, I agree. My friends Rottie started lifting his leg RIGHT after she got home from a big dog show where he was around a bunch of leg lifting males.

When Dallas first came here he would pee any where, and now he will purposely go by a tree and try to pee as close as possible to it. Not sure if that's just coincidence or if he's trying to copy the other boys.

I've always heard it was a learnt behavior, but in day care we have plenty of male dogs who do not lift their legs (they squat) and are around it ever day....and I know some female dogs who aren't very regularly around leg-lifters and they still do it.

No, I don't think so. Trey was not neutered till well after 2 years and spent all his 13 years standing to pee. Still have no idea why. He lived with other male dogs that all hiked their legs. He never did. He didn't even squat- just kind of stood there and did his business.

I also have two bitches that hike their legs on things. Summer just now got in trouble for hiking her leg on a potted plant outside.

Luke was neutered at 3.5 months old and he still stands and leans in to pee.
I've NEVER seen him lift his leg.

I know a lot of boy dogs, ranging from a 1.5yr old Rottweiler, a 1 year old Lab, a 10 year old Boxer and more who squat 100%, never lift their leg. They were all neutered around 6 mo. as far as I know.

Jackson was neutered at 7 1/2 months old. He had lifted his leg a few times before being neutered outside. He still mainly squats to pee but will lift his leg at a public park, etc.

OMG Yes! LOL. Jose` lifts his leg when we're on a "walk" every 5 - 10 ft. I swear! It's like we're not walking at all until I tell him, "Good grief! Enough already." LOL. Toker is a girl too and she often lifts her leg and sort of crouches down too. She's a big marker. It's like she and Jose` are having a contest. All my male dogs were spayed pretty early. My last GSD, a little later, like a year or so old. And they ALL lifted their legs to pee....and some squatted also. I think, if I recall, my GSD, Ajax squatted too at times. Jose` kind of squats when he reeeeelly has to go badly and in a hurry. He sort of bends his back legs at the knees and sinks into it.

Mine did. The early neuter lifted his leg long before the dog that stayed intact until adulthood.

King wasn't neutered until he was just past 3 years old. I did it for several reasons, mostly because I've seen so many great pups have a major change in personality. I wanted King to retain his playfulness, and activity level. It seems to have worked. He acts exactly the same as he did before he was neutered, and hikes his leg way up when he pees, and he marks his spots on everything. The only real physical change in him is he's softer than he was before, not as rock hard and his huge thighs lost a little muscle mass.

Turns out Dallas has started to lift his leg. Not every time but occasionally. I wonder if he's copying all the other boys.

Bamm was neutered around 6 months. I didn't get him until he was around 1.5 years or closer to 2. I'm not sure how he was before I got him, but the entire time I've had him he's been a leg lifter. He'll occasionally squat and sometimes he'll pee standing but he'll stretch his legs out so he doesn't pee on himself... weird dog... but mostly he just hikes a leg up. He LOVES to pee on anything vertical. I can't tell you how many times I catch him peeing on the bench in my mom's backyard because he would rather pee on that then in the grass

Kenai got neautered when he was 1, and he lifts his leg. Georgia, however, was spayed by her breeder when she was 6 weeks old, and she never squatted. She ALWAYS lifted her leg. :p She was raised around all boys, no girls...LOL

My grandmother's whippet was neutered at 12 months, he is now 18 months and still just stands to pee. It will be interesting to see if this changes.

My Abby actually cocks her leg to pee. She doesn't 'mark' or specifically aim it somewhere, but she does cock her leg. She was desexed at 6 months.
