That does sound like an ear infection. I would take him sooner, just because it is uncomfortable for your dog. Most likely they will give him some Epi-Otic or a similar product, which you will squeeze into the ear canal and then massage it for a few moments to work it down.

What type of dog do you have, by the way? I forget.

Ok, I was just curious. Bassets, Cockers and other long floppy eared breeds are very suseptible to ear infections.

Could be ear mites too. It's funny , when I got Chip at 4 yrs. old they said he always had ear infections... yet with me he's never had any.

Sounds like a yeast infection to me-foul odor, shaking his head, scratching, waxy gunk. Have you had him out in the water lately? If it was ear mites the 'gunk' would look like similar to coffee grinds. Incase they didn't tell ya when you made the appointment, it's best not to clean the ears the night before or the day of your appointment. That way they will get a good sample when they do the swab and look at it under the microscope. Usually like Zoom said you get a medicated ear ointment and/or cleanser that you do daily until the infection has cleared up, where I am at it's called Mometamax.
