They work basically the same.

Tivo... is a box you buy at the store and then pay a yearly fee to use.

DVR comes from your TV provider, so like with cable it just replaces your cable box, you pay a monthly fee but no upfront cost.

My DVR is like 12 dollars per month on top of regular cable but there was no upfront cost... they will charge you to come out and install the new box, but if you pick it up and do it yourself there is no cost.

Tivo is a DVR recorder, it's just a brand name one. It works best with broadcast tv, and some cable companies. Most cable and satellite providers have their own DVR machines, which can vary widely in how their controls and such work. Depending on company some want you to buy the box, others you just pay for the services ie rent.

It works kind of like a VCR but you can rewind while it is recording without messing up the recording. Some companies also let you record two channels at once so no more missing one show due to time slot issues. Most of them store your recordings for as long as you set them to, and most can be set to automatically record every episode of whatever shows you want.

My biggest issue with mine is I can't set the quality, so sometimes the recorded picture goes pixelated because it wasn't recorded at the best quality, ie oceans and other smooth colors have a tendency for this.

I adore my TIVO more than just about anything other than my pets :p.

It was a hundred or so to purchase, and $12/month for the service. There is also an option to pay for service for the life of the machine.

Half the time I don't even know what days shows are on anymore. I just set it to record my favorite shows, and then am pleasantly surprised when they are on the TIVO. I almost never watch TV live anymore.
