Durable Chew Toys

I have a 7 month old lab who LOVES to gnaw at and destroy toys. Once he senses a weakness in the toy he focuses all his attention to that one spot until he destroys it.

He loves stuffed animals but I just can't keep buying them as they don't last longer than a week. Sometimes even a few hours if he is really determined to destroy it immediately. He had a few nylabone flexibles, a long bone and a brontosaurus, but he put them in his back teeth and shredded them and ate part of it so I had to take them away. He had two JW Pet Hol-EE Rollers that he ripped through and started eating so those are gone. I give him a tennis ball and he uses his front teeth to pull the fuzz off of it until he is choking on it and there is nothing left.

So far the only thing he isn't able to destroy is the Nylabone durables. He has a durable long bone and souper bone which he chews on sporadically. I don't think he likes to chew them that much because they don't "give" at all. They are VERY tough. He seems to play with it a min or two, realizes he will not be able to sink his teeth in at all or destroy it, and then he gives up and goes for a shoe or something.

Is there some other type of toy I can give him that he won't be able to destroy and that isn't hard as a rock? It doesn't really do me much good if he won't play with it.

Planet Dog makes some pretty tough stuff, as does Orbee.

The black kong is the classic toy for strong chewers because it's super durable and it's usually appealing to dogs because it bounces great and can be stuffed with food. The orbee stuff is great too.
I would keep tennis balls away from your dog. I know one too many retrievers who have died from swallowing tennis balls and tennis ball peices.

Yeah, he crushed a tennis ball the other day just when playing fetch!

The only toy that i have found for Bailey that lasts longer than a week is the Black Kong.........this will last for around 4-6 months (if we are lucky).
I have tried just about every toy there is out there, and i vote the kong for a destructive dog

Kongs are great. I've had some luck with the large red ball kongs also.

Try www.planetdog.com for orbee tuff toys. The large bones will seem very fragile when you get them, but I haven't gotten rid of one in 2 years. They just last so long.

Herschel loves his and neither he nor I have been able to put a dent in it.

A lot of toys are guaranteed against destruction and each one of them has failed the test at my house. I don't buy into the gimmicks anymore.

I guess I can give these Orbee toys a shot. Do you think I can get away with going with the 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 5 chomp rating? I am looking for something more flexible than the hard as a rock nylabones but something that he still won't be able to destory. The Orbee-Tuff Bone looks just like the nylabone flexibles which he sinks his teeth into and shreds.

Do they really guarantee to replace or refund when he destroys it? If that is the case I will buy these things all day long.

Tried them. Didn't work. And if they do replace them.. fine.. but why buy a toy that can not live up to their guarantee?

Because its better than buying a toy having it destroyed and NOT getting your money back lolol. I am desperate here and am willing to try anything at this point. He made quick work out of the red Kong, I have a black one I am going to try but he gets mad if there isn't any food in it and usually won't play with them unless they are filled.

The Hurleys do get replaced, just make sure you save the packaging and reciept. We use these in daycare though and they're pretty tough.

Ollie is different that my Goldens who loved any stuffed toy . If it has a squeeky or eyes ...it's fair game . Take out !! Once out , I restuff and sew up .... no more ripping . None of mine ever liked hard toys .... except raw bones . For a pup , a knotted sock is great ! Or a braided or knotted rope . I've never spent much money on toys .

Another vote for Kongs from me. Those things (especially the black ones) are incredibly durable! You can't beat the variety as well; they also make balls, flying discs, tug toys, treat-dispensing toys and such out of the same material.

Day 1 of using the Hurley, he is determined to destroy this bone. It is standing up pretty well but he already got a little chunk out of it. I don't think it will last.
