I'm not sure if this note has already got to you, so forgive me if it has been duplicated.
Two and half year old border collie, loves retrieving her dumbell. However, will not "stay" when commanded. Always leaves handler's side before being sent. Any idea's how to make her stay before being sent to fetch?
thanks

Seriously, she clearly needs work on the stay/wait concept, with lots of proofing involving tossed dumb bells.

I went through the same problem with Farley. He had a very reliable stay until we got to the retrieve portion. He absolutely loves to retrieve and it was just so hard for him to catch on to the concept of waiting until I sent him. What I did with Farley was to lightly hold his right ear with my left hand. I just put enough pressure on it for him to realize I was holding it and that was enough to remind him to stay. I was eventually able to faze it out. In fact with using this method I was able to transition it into a hand signal for the release to retrieve.

Thank you all for your quick replies. Why didn't I think of that???
Have been an instructor for many years, and didn't go to the obvious (how very stupid of me.) I will endeavour to put her back on the lead.
Many thanks to you all.
