Where's a good place to buy obedience dumbbells for cheap? I don't need anything fancy or super sturdy. Just for playing around with.

Max200 is where my OB teacher recommended I go. I haven't done it yet, so Cohen is stuck with a too-big dumbbell.

I found a plastic one at TJ Maxx for cheap. It's the Clix brand. Amazon has them but not for as cheap as it was at TJ Maxx (it was like $3.)

I think you measure the width of their bite? I seem to recall having Squash bite down on a pencil and then measuring between the tooth marks.

I'm looking for a dumbbell too. Here are the two sites that have been recommended to me so far:
http://www.jjdog.com/
http://www.max200.com/index.asp

A simple plastic dumbbell is $10-20 on both sites.
Psst- One of Betsy's sisters owns MAX200. ;)

How do you size these things? I assume Mia will need the smallest.
MAX200 helped me way back when I bought mine (about 20 years ago). I did it over the phone from work, which meant Mick wasn't around to measure.

Pap-size dumbell available

My Papillon uses 1 3/4" tall bells, 1 3/4" long bit, 7/16" thick bit.

I have a 7 x 7 One-Piece Plastic Dumbbell from J & J not getting any use. PM me if interested.

If ordering on your own, their shipping is nearly as expensive as our little dbs! :p For that reason, my club usually orders as a group.

What types of dogs are suited to the low & high angle dumbbells? Do the medium angle ones suit most dogs?

Every once in a while we have an issue with picking it up from one of the balls, not the stem, and my OB instructor said that a properly fitted one would help solve the problem. I've been so lazy though...

According to Max200, the high angle is for long nosed dogs like borzoi, GSD, collie, etc.

The low angle is for short nosed dogs like pugs, shitzu, etc so the ends don't interfere with their cheeks, eyes, or vision.

There are also some that are higher or lower to the ground, which is a different thing. Maybe you need one that is higher off the ground?

Going back to the original question about where to get a dumbbell, I've gotten mine from both J & J and from Max 200 in the past. Ocean's dumbbell I "tried on" some different ones with Max 200 when they were at the big Thanksgiving cluster and they had a lot of their products with them. Ocean needs a thicker dowel because he had been rolling the old one I had from my first rottweiler. I also went with wood with him because he can sink his teeth into it and grip it unlike the plastic ones.

Here's Max 200's instructions on how to size a dumbbell - http://www.max200.com/max_storefront/scripts/openextra.asp?extra=11

Here's another good article on sizing dumbbells - http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/archives/db2.txt

For the dog who's grabbing the ends...sometimes that can happen because the dog's lips are getting pinched when picking it up. Sometimes a longer dowel can help with that.

For those of you guys who aren't sure about the size of the bells...the bells should give your dog enough clearance to pick it up without hitting their nose on the floor. If you're not sure if that's happening...watch to see if they are leaving a wet spot where they grab the dumbbell. If there is...you probably should get one that will fit your dog better. Ideally, the bells should be a little bit longer than the nose when your dog is holding the dumbbell. If you have a long nosed dog and huge bells will make it heavy to pick up...a thinner dowel may help with increasing clearance between the floor and your dog's nose. ;)

Can I bring this back? I'm looking at Max 200 right now for a dumbbell. Do you guys get one for each of your OB dogs or just use one for both?

Rider has a very skinny mouth and Tulsa's is going to be quite a bit thicker. I need to get something for them to get started on, though.

Recommendations?

I would get each their own dumbbell since their facial structure is so different. To start with one that fits properly you'll have an easier time troubleshooting grip issues, etc.

That's what I figured. I can get Rider's now since his face won't be changing. Do you think the high angle one would be best for him?

Any suggestions for puppy starting size?

Yep, I agree. Get them each a custom fit one. You might be able to use Rider's for Tulsa while she's small and growing, since you said it would be narrower, then get her own when she's bigger.

I went to an obedience seminar in June and they were ok with using a more generic dumbbell size for playing drive building games with beginner dogs (attaching it to a string and getting the dog to chase and grab). Once the dog was expected to hold it they wanted something sized just right for that dog.

The high angle ones are really for sighthoundy dogs. You'd probably be fine with a normal angle.

Not sure about puppy size. Regular angle. With a teeny bit of room to grow.

Cool. I think I will do that then.

Gotcha! Thanks so much guys! Sorry, Laur, for derailing. :)
