So in my local news ( Bay Area) I hear last night that a case has just been given to the DA because a cop from Alameda may be brought up on charges for leaving his K9 in his personal car for over 3 hours on May 5th. Needless to say the dog didn't make it and now the officer "MAY" be brought up on charges. I feel that if someone injures a K9 it is considered a felony, then this cop needs to be brought up on charges for his stupidity. What do you think?

if ANY person leaves their dog in the car and it dies. they are punished for it, thats animal abuse. why should a cop, a person who KNOWS BETTER, be exempt?

if anything, he should be punished a lot more than the avearge person. he knows better and a lot of work and training is put into those dogs...theres no reason for this guy leaving the dog in there

That has happened in Phoenix a few times.

And I agree with Renee. If one of our K9 officers passes due to handler negligence, the handler needs to step up and take FULL responsibility.

Charming. We've got our own nasty dog/police officer case going on here, and the combination of that and your story is really making me pissy.

Ours is an off-duty police officer who lets his dog run around loose outside the house unsupervised. It ran onto a neighbor's property, where there dog starting "attacking it" (despite the 'attack' going on for several minutes, there were no injuries to the officer's pug). He came out of the house with his work gun and shot the neighbor's dog within about 25' of where their kid was playing on the swingset. Shot and killed the dog WHO WAS STILL ON ITS OWN PROPERTY.

The officer pleaded not guilty to animal abuse, and is still on duty.

People suck, and apparently being a police officer doesn't make you immune to it.

I agree completely with Francheska. He should also be held accountable to the taxpayers for the cost of replacing a trained K9 officer.
Yep, I 100% agree with that.

Moreover, aren't K9s considered full officers? I mean, they have full funeral processions for them, etc. They can win awards and so on. Should there not be some criminal charges for endangering the life of an officer?

A bit overblow perhaps, but you can't treat them like officers in some cases and like throw-away pets the next.

We had a case a few counties away of a pair of cops wrongfully pulling over a family travelling from Florida -- without cause -- getting everyone, including mother and kids out of the station wagon, holding them at gunpoint, and then when the family pleaded with them to not let their dog out of the car, left the doors wide open, laughing about it.

When the family's pet APBT jumped out of the car, tail wagging, running around, to be petted (yes, it was caught on the video), and went toward one of the cops -- again, tail wagging, in full play mode that any moron could see wasn't a threat -- the b@stard shot the dog dead. Right there in front of the family, kids and all.

I don't know that the police force would have done anything to him except the community -- and statewide outrage was so great that they had to. He ended up having to leave the area. It wasn't safe for him to stay. Last I heard he'd lost his wife and kids as well.
