I have a 4 month old lab puppy and recently I have become concerned about her water drinking habbits. She will down an entire large bowl of water in one sitting! The second the filled bowl hits the floor she is all over it. Water is available to her 24/7, but I have recently begun pulling the bowl if she starts downing it like there is no tomorrow. She has been given clean bills of health at all her vet checks and is up to date on all vaccinations. The only problem we have otherwise noticed is that there is occassionally rust colored drops of blood in her stools. We had the vet do extra fecal exam and a rectal exam and neither showed any abnormalities. Her stools tend to be soft, but not what I would call diahrea.

Has anyone dealt with a crazy water drinker? Could it be diabetees? I know that extreme water craving is a symptom of diabetees in humans.

Have you had a urinalysis? Could be kidneys. What breed is she? You definately want to watch her water intake, as drinking too much too fast could lead to bloat in some dogs.

Bodhi drink like there is no tomorrow too - always has since she was a puppy.

What food is your dog on? I feed dry, and this means she does tend to feel more thirsty.

It doesn't concern me, once she's had her lot, she leaves the bowl.

Traveler (my 13 yo Lab) gets nicknamed the camel when she is drinking water--she always seem to drink a ton--but it has never been an issue for her. I don't with a puppy I might be more concerned--monitor it and recheck with the vet.

have you talked to your vet about this specific issue?

i'd do two things for right now- get a first morning urine sample (before she's had a chance to start sucking up water) and take it to the vet for a urinalysis. this will give you tons of information.

the other thing i would do is measure how much water she's actually drinking in a 24 hour period and let your vet know that too. this can be a pain in the neck to do, but it will also be valuable information.

there are plenty of options from it being just silly puppy behavior to a urinary tract infection to more serious.

Ruby has the same problem. I finally ended up teaching her "Enough" meaning that when she hears it she has to be done.

We took her to the vet as I also was worrying about her water intake, but she checked out a-ok.

I would take her to the vet and double check everything again related to water intake. If she checks out okay, and it still worries you, give her a bowl of ice cubes or ice cubes in her water bowl to slow her down.

I hope everything turns out ok! Good luck!

My old Pit mix would drink like a gallon of water at a time, but I would say he got about a quarter of that, as the rest went on the floor. He would just stand there, lapping away for like 20 minutes at a crack, sometimes longer. I had two bowls of water out, and always knew when one was getting low when I heard his tags hit the rim of the stainless corn pots we use for water dishes. Ting-ting-ting!
