I recently adopted a 1 year old boxer/hound mix....he's simply adorable and has a great personality. However, when he eats...he'll grab a mouthful..then wander off to another part of the house where he drops the food, eats half, then leaves the rest. Ive been finding kibble all over the place!!!

How do i correct this behavior without making him afraid of food?

you can try feeding him in a kennel, or baby gating him in the kitchen (or wherever he eats). That way even if he does make a mess atleast it's in one room and you don't have to worry about cleaning the whole house (just one room).

Aww he is very cute!

My dogs do the same thing, except they eat all there kibble. I would try closing off the area he eats in like juliefurry suggested.
Good luck :)

Yeah...that's a good idea. His picture looks like he's saying, "Who? Me? I didn't do it." LOL. You could put him in a very small room...the bathroom and see what happens. Or you could, if he wanders away, pick the bowl up and put it away for quite some time. Maybe he'll learn that the only way the food stays is when he stays. LOL.

Also, if he's a good weight you might want to try feeding less food or less food more often so that he eats it all at once rather than wandering around and playing with it.

you could try to feed him, and if he walks off and drops half and eats half, then take away his food before he returns. Take him back over to his half a pile and if he eats it give him back the rest.

Sounds like what my pups did when they wernt being fed. When we finally fed them, they would eat some then hid some. I bet your dog came from a shaky past, and is unsure wheather or not he'll get food again, so he's making sure he saves some. I donno what to do about it though :/
