Hi,
I took dookie to the vet about 2 nights ago. long story short 3k dollars for isolation. Now tonight, i go pick him up and use the rest of the deposit for medication. The doctor said he is unlikely to make it through. Please anyone with experience with parvo, i would just like some feed back. Thanks.

I have no experience with parvo but just want to send you well wishes for Dookie :( I feel so bad for you and him..............Has he had any puppy shots at all? How old is he, where do you think he got it from? Poor baby, I hope he makes it.

I've had firsthand experience with parvo.. what exactly has been done for Dookie? Why is he coming home and not getting supportive care at the vet?

From what I've been told, if you can keep them hydrated, they stand a much better chance. However, this means a subcuteaneous IV with fluids round the clock, something that is very hard to do at home without prior experience.

I'm very sorry for you and your pup. :(

luckily i curretnly have no job. i have all the meds, IV's and everything they were giving him at the vets. So im ready and i want to give him his meds. I want to give him the best chance. And the reason i didn't leave him was because the clinic was a specialized clinic so they are very good at what they do, thus costing so much. 3k was already payed, and i don't have the funds to leave him there anymore night. So i have made him a totally isolated area covered so no dust no nothig gets in.

they ahve done everything for dookie. meds, liquid food, and iv's. so i can only hope he will get through this.

I wish you the best. Supportive care is the only thing that can be offered at this point. Our dog Buddy spent 5 days in ICU at a local animal hospital when he came down with parvo. I know how quickly costs can escalate. I wish you the best in your fight for your dogs survival!

Check the threads on parvo here and at dog.com forums. There was a thread of someone who used Gatorade rather than water to keep their pup hydrated and it worked very well. There is no magic to this. With proper hydration he has a chance but it comes down to how strong he is.

Best of luck, we're pulling for him.

I have brought several pups through parvo. I had the meds from vet to coat the stomach lining and administered gatorade or pedialyte every 15 minutes several drops at a time. You will get no sleep but they do seem to survive. I lost one out of 11. The rest made it through. A old country vet gave me this way at the time when they could not be saved. So far it has worked. Never give the pup enough to cause throwing up just about a teaspoon at a time. I hope he makes it.

ok i've been at it for about 5 hours. He seems to be stable, coming home made him a bit more perky. i've heard alot of good things about gatorade. i will give it a shot. would you guys recommend gatorade along with the liquid diet? because i have 5 medications and the food suplement. 1 IV, 4 shots, and the food. Thanks again, you guys have been awesome.

Personally, I would stay away from the Gatorade and use Pedialyte. Pedialyte is specifically designed for fluid replacement therapy and has the proper balance of electrolytes whereas Gatorade has a higher sugar content which may contribute to diarrhea. Get the non flavored type. You can purchase it at most drug stores.

okay, today he is ok, a bit more alert. During the night he had one case or diahrea, and didn't take good to the liquid diet so i lowered the intake. and after the initial bowl movement it seemed like he was discharging small "doses" of diahrea along with some gas. is this a sign of recovery or is it a sign of things getting worse. I want to go the whole way but i don't want it to be a lost cause. =(

Thank you all for your advice and for hoping he get's through it. Today, he ate a bit of liquid diet and has yet to throw up. Also, he has become more sensative to the injections, he never used to whimper, showing me that he is strong enough to whimper now.

It's looking very promising. He's up, trying to get out of the isolated area we have him in. One time he actually made it out and walked into my room. Still a bit groggy, a bit of the runs. But compared to the way we brought him home, he looks and i hope he's on his way to a full recover. Just can't get careless. Thanks again everybody.

I agree...Pedialyte works a lot better.

I had a border collie/lab who had Parvo. We adopted her from the local humane society. It's no fun at all. I hope Dookie feels better soon.
