Hello all,
I live in Santa Ana, CA. Many years ago this part of my neighborhood used to full of gang bangers and such. Lately crime has been cut down to almost zero, but there still tends to be a bit of lingering from the gang bangers, rare but it happens. My neighbors dogs got stolen, they were full grown dogs, not sure what type but they were on the rottweiler kinda breed.
So about three weeks ago, some little punk kids walked by and saw my dog, according to my neighbor he heard them talking about the dog, then next thing he saw was them walking away with dookie. Ever since that has happened, i've been pretty pissed off and waiting to confront anyone that would try it again.
In short, does anyone have any solutions to this???
Thanks

P.S. We try to keep the gate locked, but my brother is a bit lazy and my mother is a bit forgetful.

Yeah...keep him inside and don't let him out in the yard unless someone is out with him.

I know many a dog that has been stolen while the owners are right there inside the house...and sadly, they aren't stolen to become loved pets. They're stolen for bad reasons.

I never let my dog outside without going with her, and she's plenty big and capable of defending herself...you just never know what people are up to these days.

has he been checked by a vet for the skin bacteria? And no matter how bulky-is it your intent that he only be an outside dog? I would guess you will have a problem keeping him safe then, according to what you have said about your area.

Umm.. no.

I doubt you'll find a lot of people here that encourage or condone dogs living in yards. The title of this thread is "Dookie almost got stolen" and you've stated that several dogs have already been stolen. If him eventually growing up to being so large and bulky that you don't want him inside is a problem, while he's still a cute puppy (now) is the time to put him in a rescue where he can find a home that's suitable for him.

Choice is really inside when not watching or the dog may be.. stolen. Up to you.

I know a lady in Texas whose dane and another dog were stolen out of her padlocked backyard last week. They were found dead 3 days later outside the town limits. Hopefully you won't willingly make that choice.

Why on earth would you get a dog just to stick it in the backyard?!? Whether it is big or not is NO reason!

Give your pup up now while it's young, to someone that will do this poor pup justice and share the warm, loving home with him that he deserves.

:( That's awful.

To the OP, big and bulky is not a valid excuse for making a dog live outdoors, ESPECIALLY in an area where he is at significant risk of harm.

Want to know big and bulky? I've had anywhere from 1-8 great danes living inside with me at any given time. Big, bulky, drooling danes. You can handle it with your one dog.

If you're not going to give him a safe home, I'd consider rehoming him with someone who will.

I'd hate to see your next post titled "Dookie was Stolen"

please oh please keep Dookie inside! Especially with his breed people who are looking to steal him are probably looking to fight him and I know you would not want that. Keep him safe, keep him inside. Some dogs can live outside with the proper kennel but Dookie would just not be safe, he has to be inside and, when out, under constant supervision.

Dogs are meant to be inside with their owners or outside with their owners. They're meant to be WITH their family. They're a social animal and keeping him outside alone is just wrong. Please find a better home for him or start keeping him at your side. Skin bacteria should be treated and you shouldn't worry about humans getting it. Humans get very few things from dogs. Big is no excuse. I have 4 dogs, two big ones, two small ones in a very small house. We do just fine. I don't see what point there is in having a companion who is delegated to be alone in a yard. Dogs are suppose to be part of the family. I hope nothing happens to your poor Dookie.

If the choice is keeping Dookie inside unless he is directly supervised or having him stolen or hurt, is it really that hard to choose?
