the president has the authority to repeal it unilaterally. i hate to say it but our country isn't mature enough to repeal DADT.
OTH before DADT as long as they didn't bring it to work a lot of people just looked the other way.
Pretty much this. My ex husband had some pretty obviously homosexual guys in his unit in NY. Truth be told, nobody bothered them, and they didn't bother anyone, and it was beyond just a rumor that they were gay.

Personally I don't care, repealing DADT is going to have some interesting effects and not everyone is going to be on board with it, however, if say the president repealed it I would expect even the most gay-hating but good soldier is going to just suck it up, or be punished severely.

The focused, dedicated, military men who are strong enough to see past what I think is a fairly barbaric issue, and who are either gay, or straight and mature enough to be in a military, should not be punished for this.

The bigots who would cause the problems upon repealing it should be. And maybe there are a lot of them, but are those really the kind of people we want in our military? People who might let their brothers in arms, their countrymen, citizens of the land they are protecting, DIE because of something that is absolutely none of their business in the first place?

If they're letting their fellow soldiers die in battle because of their sexuality, what's to say they are not the kind of person wouldn't shoot any Iraqi because of their religion, let any Jewish, Black, Democratic, comrade die? Those are not the people I want overseas defending and representing my country.

I cannot argue with this on a logical level. It makes perfect sense from the comfort of one's living room. But on a practical level, is it worth the risk to do it NOW, in a time of war? Think about how this issue gets set back should the unthinkable happen? Even a single life is not worth the risk at this time.

The "what if's" are also easy to ask from the comfort of home... That does not change reality in the field.

It's a shame... Dare I say embarrassing that our country, our military, has the kind of people in it who would allow such a despicable thing to happen? But the reality is there are... A wave of a wand does not change hearts.

Those are not the people I want overseas defending and representing my country.
I'm not trying to be a smartass here... But it's gonna sound like it.

You are more than able to join up and show them how to do it better.

Interesting, my sister enlisted to an infantry position on September 11, 2001 and the guys all thought it was cool that she was gay; they could all read the same magazines and comment on girl's asses.

She got out due to a combination of lack of training officers (being all posted overseas at the time) and compartment syndrome of her lower legs.

Might not have been a problem since we're Canucks though.
