hey everybody, i am new to the forum and i have posted a few threads looking for information about my english bully, i have gotten remarkable feedback from you all so i would like to ask about something else.

nook nook is now 3 months old and is housetrained about 95% and i say 95% because he sometimes has an accident if he doesnt go out for a long period of time, or is let in from outside with out being taken out first. so when i go to work i leave him in my backyard which is mostly cement and it also has a patio and a game room, and an area about 20 feet wide and 40 feet long that is dirt/grass, this is where he should eliminate. the door to the game room stays open all day, this is where his food, water, toys and bed are, so he does fine through out the day mosying around but he soils the game room if im not taking him out to the area where he should go, obviously because im not home. when im home and i say lets go out nook, he leads me to the spot, so he knows where to go and knows where it is, even if i catch him squating somewhere else i will say no, nook GO OUT! and he will stop in his tracks and walk/run with me over to the right area. so i know he knows where it is but he doesnt seem to use it when im not there. maybe he is still to young to have high expectations, i dont know thats why im asking, another thing is that there is a pile of leaves/dirt that i gathered up to dispose of but it got left behind from the trash so now he has a few soils there and thats where he runs to if im not there and hes outside already, so if hes outside he will eliminate in the pile of dirt, and if hes in the game room he will eliminate in there. i need to know how to correct this and get him to go to the right spot and stop soiling the game room. thats my biggest issue, he knows not to go in there, and im very clean so i know he cant smell any residue after i clean up his mess, please help!, thanks.

I don't know what you're cleaning his accidents with, but he can smell where he's been even when you can't if you don't clean it with the right kind of cleanser. It has to be an enzyme cleaner. There are products just for cleaning pet urine. (I think Oxyclean also works?) At least Oxyclean cleaned the spots and odor for us, and our dog doesn't go back to those spots. Also, if it's carpeted, and you continue to have trouble, the padding under the carpet might have the odor (to the sensitive canine nose).

I don't think you can expect a puppy to be consistent before about 6 months old.

It would be much kinder to confine him in a manner so that he cannot get to the game room to soil it when you are away. You could put up temporary fencing, or just close the door.

Keeping him OUT of the game room for a while will force him to make different elimination choices while you are away.

While you are at home, make sure you are accompanying him on each outing, and giving him a food reward the instant he is done while he's in the right area.

Exactly. He's still too young to understand that he should only go outside. I'm glad you're making progress, but it still seems like the allocated space in the game room is too big. Either make the space smaller or try gating him out of the game room while you aren't there.

I would just like to add a little something. I'm also a newbie here - and am here for GETTING advice, not giving it. But I will admit if you're at 95% at 3-4 months old.... that seems great. DON'T FALL BEHIND!!! We had our Dachshund 90% or so in or around that same time frame (6 months or so), then because my mom ended up in the hospital for 2 months solid, the dog was left alone in the house everyday during that time, and we're back to square 1 pretty much... and we've had him for 9-10 months now... and we're STILL house training him :(

One thing I noticed you mentioned about your English Bulldog, you said when he's with you or being coax'd, he goes to the same place everytime... thats great. My Dox doesnt do that. He's all over the place outside (inside, he like the upstairs near the pool table!). I agree, I think you're in terrific shape - I think time and repetition will "solve" your issues.

I'm jealous BTW: I sooooo want an English Bulldog - but can't afford one. I would name him Churchill.... which as some may know is a Cigar SIZE... Then I'd have a STOGIE and CHURCHILL -- The cigar dog BROTHERS! :D

Definitely give food rewards. The more desireable the reward, the faster he will learn. Good luck.

Is it possible to put a doggy door in the door to the game room?

Then you could put up an exercise pen and only allow him a SMALL area inside while you are gone, with the great outdoors out there for elimination.

possibitlity, the game room has a doggy door, but he is actually doing well and i think the treat thing is working with GO OUT, he hates being caged or anything ike that but my main reason is tat i have another dog and they are real good buuddies so anything that one does the other gets pissd if he/she cant do it, i think i got it but thanks for your guys input. i guess i will just keep pressing on hard until he understands.
