We are bringing our 2 dogs to my mothers new house for Christmas Eve. They are not really dog people and they just moved into a newer home. They said that the dogs may come along (we didnt want to board them or beg a neighbor to go out of his way on Christmas Eve) but they are going to stay in their rooms in a heated but non carpeted portion of the basement.

Normally our dogs go into their rooms when we leave or on their own to get away for awhile, but they are only closed up when we are gone. I have been occasionally putting the dogs in their rooms while the rest of the family noises are going on so they will be used to it, plus the area where they will be staying is further away at my moms house so they wont be distracted by seeing us.

The good part about all this for me is that I now have an excuse to get away to walk the dogs every so often.

Any other advice on this? It is just for one night and the kids are already planning on putting their airmattress in by the dogs over night that night (in reality I dont see that happening) but Im willing to sit in with the dogs overnight if I have too in order to keep them calm and quiet.

Can't they go into your bedroom at night ???? Try not to make a big deal out of it ....it's only one night and it is Christmas . Really , your parents and kids are #1 as I'm sure the dogs won't suffer .

I should have clarified myself better. When Im talking about the dogs "rooms" they are the crates.
The only thing Im even a little concerned about is if the dogs start getting too loud, but I will worry about that when it comes up. My wife, kids and I are sleeping in a finished portion of their basement. The dogs will be in the unfinished portion, which has access straight to the garage for me to take them out when they need too.

Any chance of them staying overnight before you take them to your parent's place?? That way, you can see how they do in a strange place in their crates and work from there.
