Those would be karelian bear dogs yes. I know they're used often in these parts for "bear education."

Cougar are pretty cool critters. I've only spotted them doing their thing a couple times at my parent's house. Every other time I've seen them it involved a dog at the base of the tree and a very angry cat sitting at the top. Out there is pretty rural, we tended to let the wild critters just do their thing unless they caused issues.

I slightly did some reasearch on the Karelian's sounded like they would make a great hiking partner, but I dont think personality wise we would get along ha ha

At my place we have Cougars and so much other wildlife, thankfully they leave everyone alone and I hope it stays that way.
