I always get irritated when people just get rid of their dogs so easily.

Oh, he's barking, I'm going to have to get rid of him.

Oh, he's biting me and my grandma and the next door neighbor, instead of getting him help, I'm going to ship him off somewhere so he can get into trouble and be put to sleep so I don't have to deal with it.

Oh, he's too expensive. I'm not willing to make sacrifices so I'm going to re-home or something, I don't know yet, but he's definitely going.

Oh, he's pooping and peeing everywhere! The madness! He's going to live outside on a chain for the rest of his life.

Oh, he needs a $3000 surgery that we can't afford because we just bought a new house and a new dog and a new BMW. Oh well, guess he'll have to suffer. And then, when we move somewhere fun he'll go to the worst place possible for him. Oh well, he's just a dog.

And you know what, dogs are NOT disposable. They don't go out on Wednesday nights for Thursday morning trash days. At least, not for those that give a hoot about animals. They are living souls. Full of unconditional love and compassion. They deserve to be respected and cared for just as any other living being on this earth.

There are a few rare explanations/reasons for re-homing an animal. Especially when that animals needs all the help it can get- but isn't getting in it's supposed forever home.

I pray to God that there are people out there that are going to read this and think about the seriousness of owning a dog. About the responsibility, the time, the money, the heart it takes to be owned by an animal. Dogs are not disposable, people, they are living, breathing, caring, compassionate souls that deserve a good chance at life.

I agree for the most part. I know from working in a shelter in the past that some of the excuses people make up for abandoning their pets are so superficial it has to be seen to be believed.

HOWEVER, sometimes life can be unpredictable. One should be judged on his or hers individual circumstance and his or hers individual circumstances only. Even good, honest owners can be put in the terribly painful position of having to re-home an animal. Sometimes, for genuine reasons (for example), a rescue dog may not work out for a particular family. It happens. Sometimes, for genuine reasons, enough time truly cannot be dedicated to the dog in which case re-homing is often the best option. It happens.

You really cannot lump everyone in the same boat.

*sigh* if you read my thread on people that dump dogs.....you'll already know I agree with my entire heart. I would beg people.....do NOT get a puppy or dog ...EVER...if you can't deal with all that comes with that responsibility. *sigh* again.

Which is why I said this:

Dog's aren't disposable now?
*opens desk drawers pulls out pomerainian, uses as kleenex and tosses in garbage*

I think I'm rather lucky in that everybody I know has steered away from getting dogs as they know how much time and effort it requires (some of them from watching me have to leave places early or what not to be able to go let out or feed dogs).
Haven't actually met anybody who considers dogs disposable.

I took "very rare" as meaning "there are not many explanations", which I felt meant that you were putting everyone in the same boat. My apologies.

we've all known people that get a puppy on a whim. I have no clue as to what they are thinking, but sometimes they just don't see the 'big picture' as to care. don't have babies on a whim.....don't get pets on a whim. it's all such a huge responsibility, and a lifetime of care that is required. ok...I'll stop. lol

sorry...LOL. the little lost dog still has me beside myself. another 'friend for life' just tossed aside. it kills me. it kills me to see them scared, hungry, skinny. it kills me that somebody got them as a puppy....and they were all full of joy. then........they were just tossed and dumped. what they must feel, how sad they must be. ooops......I said I'd stop....and I didn't. ok....I SWEAR, now I will. I just die everytime I see the sadness...................

Rat terrier eh? I'll try picking up a package of those next time I'm at Walmart.

Any suggestions as to what breeds would be good as TP though? every one I've tried so far always stops up the toilet.
Preferably something in a bulk pack, but that's easy to return so I can bring it back if I don't like it.

You know how I feel about this subject by now I hope.
My dogs are my kids. Unfortunately for me I am the cities " Kool Aid mom" to dogs. By that I mean having to take in, re-home these disposable ones you speak of . It makes me ill to see a dog owned just long enough to aquire all the bad habits it can and gain great amounts of mistrust and abuse only to be dumped and replaced by a cute puppy. Or the other thing that so ticks me off is when they have had a home and love now they are old and in the way so dump them. I have Miss Betty who is incontinent, blind and in heart failure but I would never dream of her going until she can no longer get up . I so owe her until the end for the countless hours of love and good times she has provided me.
I see miss Nikki that you are still tormented as I am about a certain something.

I will never understand it...
As a foster mom, and as a member on this forum I often feel jaded and literally sick to my stomach about it.

If a child develops a bad habit, do you get rid of them?
You know what, don't even answer that . . .

YES.... it makes all of us who pour our hearts and souls into our animals to see this happen. And YES most of the time it is a p!ss poor excuse when someone wants to get rid of their dog. BUT as animal lovers I think we owe it to the dog to do our best to help that owner make the best decision as far as where to take the dog for rehoming. I KNOW that it makes our blood boil to hear these things and we hate to think about where that dog might end up.... but if we help educate and give good advice we might have a chance to help that dog find a GREAT home instead of a cold floor at a shelter. We may not like it.... but trying to bully someone into keeping a dog they don't want is NOT in the best interest of the dog at ALL. If someone has decided they don't want their dog then they are no longer in a position to give that dog the love and care it needs and deserves. It is obvious that it is too late to try to talk them into keeping it and IMO, getting someone to keep a dog they don't want will be detrimental to the dogs well being in the long run. So as much as it pains each and every one of us.... we must put aside our anger and sadness and do what we need to do to help that owner to do the best thing as far as finding a home or a GOOD rescue. Will they always do the right thing? No they won't.... but I will sleep much better at night knowing I tried my best to help that dog and failed rather than knowing I let my anger get in the way of good advice.
