Jackson has been doing well with the potty, when we are not home he uses the diaper pads, and usually asks to go outside when we are home...but occasionally if you are not paying 100% attention to him he will eliminate on the floor, bed...wherever he is. It's almost as if he is mad at us. We have decided to get him a litter box to use. Do these work for dogs? I am afraid he will drag the litter all over the house to play with. Will he become dependant on it? I'd like him to be able to do both. Any suggestions or comments?

Here is some info from the net:
http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm

There also may be some old threads here about litterbox training. If you have decided on the litterbox it would be best to just stick to that method only. If you are using pee pads sometimes and taking him out sometimes and start litter training too he will just be confused IMO. Stick to one method and be consistent and he will learn much faster.

thank you for the info. that is my biggest concern is confusing him with too many options. currently we work strange hours and he needs to use the pads for eliminating, but still tells us (most of the time) when he needs to go out! he is just so small i can't expect him to hold it too long during the day!
Thanks again for the info

Have you thought about crate training your pup? I know you are working some strange hours, but deciding on if you want him to go potty inside of the house for the rest of his life, or to go outside should be done now... so you don't confuse him even further down the line.

I think I know what you are saying. Ralph was potty pad trained before I got him. I take him out for walks, but they are mostly for his cardio health (ok, mine too).

When I am at work he is in the kitchen behind a babygate and has a couple of potty pads in a corner for his use. He will usually go once during the day.

When I get home we do a power walk to the dog park. That usually involves a pee and a poo during the break. Power walk home. (MinPins require fast walks or they get nothing out of it and are hyper MinPains.)

During the evening if he wants to go out again I put him on the pads. (Actually, all I have to do is put him behind the babygate...he gets it from there.) That way he'll learn that his potty pad option is always there. I am still keeping vigilent and he's not allowed to be anywhere in the house without my eyes on him. At bed time he goes behind the babygate where his open crate is. (The crate is now just a place to sleep for him.)

Sometimes I will find a used potty pad in the morning but we have a short power walk in the morning with a pee and a poo. Then he goes into the kitchen for the day with things to chew on all day.

So far...so good.
