I am needing some advice on the new doggy door we got Saturday Oatmeal,Kasumi, and Elmo use it just fine but Otis won't he just sits there until you go over and lift the flap for him to come in I don't know if he is scared of it or he just likes the door being open for him we have tried lifting it and showing him that it won't hurt him and when he comes through praise him really well with voice, rubbing, and treats but nothing works i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make it easier for him. Thanks

I put mine on leash and had someone help me. One person on one side, and one person on the other side. First I held up the flap and gave treats each time they went through. Then I held the flap a little lower so they felt it when they went through but they didn't actually have to move it. Still many treats. Then I didn't hold the flap and just rewarded for going through.

Don't rush things, too. If all you work on for a week is coming through the door with him only feeling the flap and you still holding it, you're still making progress and showing him that dog door/touching flap = yummies.

Go outside with the other dogs and HIS favorite toys. Proceed to play loudly enough that he can hear you. Dispense treats liberally. Repeat until he can't stand it anymore ;)

When we taught ours to use them, I lifted up the flap completely then lots and lots of treats. Each time I let go sooner and sooner so the flap starts hitting them more and they get used to it. If they don't understand then I hold their collar, lift the flap and throw the treats out. After I drop the flap, I let them go and they usually realize they can go out.

I tried doing the playing outside with other dogs, but some don't realize they can go through it. They think it's magic that they can walk through a wall ;)

When we first got it i took turns with each of the dogs putting them through the door and calling them back in and rewarding them with treats after 2 days Oatmeal,Kasumi, and Elmo go in and out all the time. I think your right dobelove they seem to go out and come back in as soon as there out lol i think it makes them feel special lol

Otis is special. He likes it when people open doors for him and would rather see you serving him opening the door than taking the easy way and going through the doggie door. :lol-sign:
