They say its not a nasty dirty dog smell, not a dog poop smell, it just smells like dogs. LOL.

Thanks for the Baking Soda idea... I'll try that later this afternoon when everyone is napping.

Yeah, my house smells like dog, too. But, I have three dogs, lol.

We clean weekly, and have the carpets done 2x/year. But if it still smells then oh well, lol.

I got a roomba (its a little robot vacuum) so when i leave the house i powder baking soda and let it do the work for me :)

it goes from carpet to floors and is really fun to watch!!! lol

we also have a scumba that washes and scrubs the floors. we just shedule the scumba before the roomba every day and we come home to a pretty much clean house :)

they go back to their docks and charge after they are done and the cats have a blast chasing them around

If you have carpet Mer, that's probably why. Carpet holds in smells. We removed all the carpet from our house, and installed laminate in the living room and den, and vinyl on the bedrooms and hallways. Smells *great*! Even with all of my dogs, you do not smell a doggy smell. I keep the house swept and mopped daily, the dogs get a bath every 2 weeks, and they get their all natural apple spritz spray everyday, and it smells fine.

If you do have carpet, I second the baking soda suggestion. When we did have carpet, I vacuumed every single day (I have asthma, and dust mites were a big trigger) and I sprinkled baking soda, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then vacuumed it up. It really did freshen things up.

I've had trouble with my vacuum cleaner; powders and such seem to gum up the works, maybe from moisture mixed with powders, so I've stopped using powder material for now. The remaining carpets in my downstairs are old and we have hardwood floors underneath them.

I am using a Bissell Pet hair eraser now as my electrolux twin clean is in the shop!

im SOOO getting a roomba when we get our own house (or i find one dirt cheap) i HATE vacuming and love gadgets, whats not better than letting a little robot vacume take over the dirty work...
the scooba looks very cool too, how is it on hardwood?

as for the doggy smell...
ive found none dog people will always smell an underlying odor...personally its not something i smell (and i have a very good sense of smell) unless it gets realy bad...

its just like your house smells like YOU too, you live their your skin shedds cells into the carpet, your bodywash, shampoo, perfumes ect get left on the soft furnishings ect...but people are so used ot "people" smell that they dont smell the "people smell" a house has...
dogs though...people notice that, particularly when they dont have dogs...

baking soda in the carpets works well...
febreeze or lysol air effects is your best bet in terms of de-oderizers for soft furnishings (you want one that eliminates not covers) and youll need to spray it on EVERYTHING soft...couch, curtains bed ect...even if the dogs dont come into contact with it.

for our house, the dogs bedding gets washed/rotated once a week...blankets on the bed/couch, ect, once a month
i lightly febreeze all soft furnishings once a week...
with all that if someone comes in and says my house smells like dogs i ask if its a bad EWW wet dog/poop smell or if its just a "hey this house isnt stearlized like a hospital every day" smell...as long as its not wet dog/poop theyll get over it...

i also run an automatic air freshner in the kitchen (one that squirts once every however many mins we have it set to hourly as im sensitive) but thats to keep down the "what the hell are they cooking in the upstairs apartment' smell
and i run a plug in oil one with hazelnut scent in it simply because i LOVE the smell...

the only people ive found that say anything are people that dont have pets...

ive been in homes that smell like bleach and cleaning solution and THAT smell hits me like a tone of bricks, id rather have a home that smells clean but that dogs live there than one that smells like its a hospital.

THe scoomba is amazing on hardwood and tile, has worked great for us :) But it does sometimes have some trouble getting over door frames and other obstacles

the roomba picks up pet hair, crumbs and other stuff.. its a life safer for the carpet. my mom does vacuum when she can, because its not perfect, its cant reach EVERYWHERE. but its great to have the house floor pretty clean when we come home
and they are great conversation peices :) nobody can ignore the lil robots scooting around

heres how the scoomba works:

They are pretty pricey, i got mine as gifts because my uncle works at brookstone

For those that have carpet cleaners - when I lived with my parents we spent a lot of money on different cleaners and such that go in it.
What worked the best was putting water in a tea pot and heating it up, then putting it in the cleaner. Seriously, just straight HOT water. For bigger messes I tried a vinegar-water solution. I was extremely nervous at first, because I didn't want my house to smell like vinegar, but it worked really well and it really didn't smell bad ~ just clean!

Actually, now I use bleach-water and vinegar-water and baking soda (not at the same time! lol) to clean just about everything.

And I bought the Bissell pet hair eraser... I was sceptical, but I love it ;)
I'm envous of the scoomba thing. I can so picture Tucker attacking it! :rofl1:

We used to do the baking soda thing before but we had plenty of trouble with burning out motors. When we got central we were told that any kind of powder was a no no for vacuums as they would destroy the motor. Wish we had know this before. We get the carpets done every 3 months and we do them ourselves in between. All we ever use is vinegar and hot water cause I don't like chemicals in the carpets too often. It does a better job than the cleaners anyway. No one has ever mentioned it smelled doggie in the house so it mustn't be bad. I use Lysol spray and sometimes the foam spray that disappears in 5 minutes. We want to lift our carpets too but flooring is so hard to walk on that I'm still undecided.

I keep telling my sister that the best thing to do is generally wash the dogs. Mine get bathed once a week and groomed daily, my house also gets vaccuumed daily. If things are kept clean they don't smell.

I have hardwood, so that helps. But I'm obsessed with not having a stinky house (I have cats, too, which does not help). If the weather is nice enough, open the windows, even a crack, for a cross breeze. It sounds silly, but IMO it works the best. I also have air purifiers (though that's for my allergies too). I really try not to use chemicals (and definitely agree with the suggested hot water/vinegar approach -- a lot of people clean with *just* hot water), but I do have a "green" Febreze alternative for the couches (my dog is allowed on the furniture). I use reed diffusers and plug-ins (mine are from Illuminations; I try to use them sparingly so not as to actually pollute the air more) and soy candles.

I've been tempted by the Roomba and Scooba so many times...but I'm nearly certain that some animal of mine would beat it into submission pretty quickly and it wouldn't last long around here at all!
