What dog breed is the best at smelling comparisons. For example. I have something in my hand and I want him to find the scent some place else.

Bloodhounds are one of the best if not the best at that, in general of course...but you have to train them alot to do that, they won't just do it.

Any dog can be trained to be scent trained, but if you want a dog with a particular aptitude for it, hounds are your best bet. Much training goes into the scent discrimination scenario though.

I was reading about Bloodhounds on Wikipedia and it said that they can only smell things living. Does anyone have experience in this?

ANY dog can be scent trained, but some dogs are just better equipt for it.

My Belgian is scent trained for S&R, he can also retrieve a lost toy I ask him to "find", he can also find objects he doesn't know what they look like - he'll scent my hand and then find them. He hasn't missed once.

Bloodhounds - IF trained properly can find anything you send them out to find. Alive or dead.

That sounds like what I'm interested in. What I'm asking is basicly what dog has the best ability of scent. In the Bloodhounds instance I wouldn't want a dog that can only smell the living if that truely is the case. More of something along the lines of heres this bush find another bush that smells just like it i.e the same species.

I'm pretty sure all dogs are capable of finding things using their scent abilities. Bloodhounds (and other hounds) have an advantage do to their long ears (the scent sticks to their ears) and wrinkles (apparently the dog can focus on the scent better because the wrinkles cover their eyes). I've heard Bloodhounds and Coonhounds have the best sense of smell, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. A dog can smell anything, alive or dead, I'm sure. Breed doesn't really matter as far as I'm concerned.

When I get my Toller I plan on training for S&R with her. Tollers aren't known for tracking things, but they can do it just as easily as any other breed and they love it.

All dogs have extraordinary noses, but the Bloodhound is hard to beat when it comes to tracking.

My Papillon can smell his favorite, ratty old toy in the trash compactor, for example. Amidst all the garbage, he knows where his ripped, filthy Stewie doll is. I've never been able to throw it away without him knowing.

Well I think that Bloodhounds like SummerRiot said, if trained right are VERY good at finding anything.

But I am training Lizzie a Border Collie mix to "find" things and she is in the very early stages but is doing VERY good!!!! :D

I love to watch scent retrieves at Obedience Shows !! I feel all dogs have good scents ... but the Bloodhounds are best because they are bred and trained for it .

Yeah I can't say I'm totally convinced. I need to see some live video feeds or some kind of owner testimonals. Anyone know a good site that has trainning videos or the like.

It would be **** cool to see a bloodhound smell one bush and then find another several miles away.

One of the best indicators will be the breeds that Customs and the police use. I've seen several in the airport, so they probably test the dogs individually as well as having a general idea of the best breeds.

I recall my GSD years ago, who wasn't formally scent trained, performing some great scent skills! e.g. I brought a new male friend home from college, walked him part way down the long gravel driveway, then realised that my dog (who couldn't see us) was going nuts because no-one else was home and she was very protective of me as the junior pack member. So I sent my friend back up the driveway, over the road, and into the middle of the park to wait for me so that I could introduce my dog on neutral ground...

Well I got her on her lead and she was fully nose-to-the-ground, pulling me at high speed all the way up the driveway, over the tarmac road, across the grass, past all kinds of people and dogs ... right up to my unknown friend. She stood in front of him and barked away! (Cool!! Can't get anything past my smart girl!)

It all went well after that, BTW. He wasn't eaten alive ... but he was duly warned ;) .
