So I'm sure everyone has stories of getting hurt by their dogs. Whether it's a mistimed kick or poorly aimed bite on a tug. I've been working on vaults and rebounds with Pig lately so I could probably play an extra in a bad horror flick with how many scratches I've got right now. Figured I'd start a thread to swap stories and maybe share some advice on preventing injuries.

I got nailed pretty hard by Tulsa last week playing disc.

One dog at work bit me and left a bruise. I've also had a goose egg chin from a dog jumping up when I went to kennel him.

I was heeling with Brisbane at an obedience practice, running along while looking down at him, and run into a low tree branch. Broke my glasses and got a massive shiner. Worked at an elementary school at the time, and told each child that asked a different tall tale to see if they noticed. They didn't. There are probably high school kids out there now who still think I was attacked by a polar bear or fell off a riding ostrich.

My worst over all was a bite from a GSD at the dog park when he went after Traveler. Managed to not puncture my arm but did some damage.

My back, my sides, my legs and one fun time my face from a foot stall gone wrong are always marked. Overall though I've just come to the conclusion I'll always be covered in bruises and scratches from disc work. I don't really feel it anymore unless I'm working on something new but there is going to come a time when things get awkward I'm thinking :D

But really, once you train it and start working on it and the dogs know where to put their feet and how to move it all gets much easier. It's just getting through that training phase. Though, I can't remember the last time my thighs weren't bruised

ETA: I did have a class I was teaching with an over enthusiastic bully mix that LOVED to jump, grip and scratch down my arms. I left each class with some fantastic bruises and scratches down my arms

I've not had too bad of things happen except when a Saint Bernard ripped my thumb open trying to attack Simba when I was younger.

Otherwise, got a lot of scratches and busted lips from working at the grooming salon.

Once in a while get a bite or scratch playing with our dogs, but not too often, actually.

The worst ever was when Scout muzzle punched my thigh two summers ago. I was using her bumi (big mistake, too high value!) in distraction training for the ATV/BC situation at my parent's place. She went way over the top in arousal. My fault for making a bad choice in using a high value toy and not just a plain old stick. Sheesh that bruise had to be at least 8-10in across and just looked bad.

Bitten through my lip once or twice, Malinois bit me in the boob, rope burn from Bloo's drag line (which scarred over), stuff like that. I fell through a rotten barn floor last month getting a cheap teeter, lol. That has scarred over nicely.

Merlin, as my little stalker, is always underfoot. So I trip over him sometimes.

Otherwise? He is incredibly gentle, even mouthing wise ever since he was a baby...I have never had a snagged tooth, nail, mark or anything that I can recall.

People tell me that's strange for an aussie but he isn't very rough and tumble. More fluff and bounce

That said, I trip over him A LOT. Like, FALL DOWN, and then he thinks we are playing kind of thing :rofl1:

Kili has a tendency to re-grip on my hand if I use a toy that doesn't have a handle. That hurts.

The occasional rebound might hurt a bit, but generally she's pretty light on her feet, surprisingly.

Well right now I am sporting a nice bruise on my forearm from Hank missing a tug last night. :( I see why people with drivey dogs get bit now.

My worst injury was from a bite from Trey after he'd gone partially deaf and blind. I went to take somethin from him. He nailed my hand and I have a scar from it still on the back of my hand.

Hank bit my boob too. A few days ago. Ouchhhhh.

His mouthiness and nippiness is a work in progress.

I have a hand full of healing Nosework scars now.

Yep. Scars. From Nosework. Which according to my dog, is a high intensity contact sport.

I have a scar on my hand from breaking up a dog fight at my work. It punctured and was pretty deep and took forever to heal. It's pretty much the only dog-related scar I have. I get scratches and bruises a lot (from work) but nothing big thankfully! Paris and Seamus are both super gentle and have never injured me.

Years ago my old Roxy dog gave me a HUGE black eye. Cracked me right in the face with her noggin.

I constantly get bruises from the scooter. Not sure if that really counts.

Squash broke my nose earlier this year. That was super fun.

I play disc professionally, the list of injuries I've endured is extreme so I'll just list today's.

Zinga bit my thigh and hand during heel work.
Zip Tie tried to dislocate a rib during a reverse chest vault.
Zip Tie vaulted off my throat causing me to cough/gag for breath.
My personal favorite for today: Zinga attempted to strangle me during a shoulder stall and left giant, claw shaped surface bruises on my neck.

Have I ever mentioned how much fun koolies are?

I've been injured many times at work by dogs, most recently on a hike where a lab decided to grab a long log and attempt to run off with it as I walked by. He had a hold of it rather off centered, so it stood up and whacked me on the side of my face, much like stepping on a rake.

By my OWN dogs, I'd say it was when Pit and Zero crashed into me from behind, sending me to the ground with my camera. I was fine, but my camera bit the dust. It was a sad day.

Hugo has only left minor scratches from when I first got him. I don't bruise easily and he only weighs 33 pounds, so contact work isn't too bad.

However, my sister had a pit boxer mix who used to get excited and leap up to your face and then panic on the way down and try to grab you to slow his descent. Since she never really trimmed his nails.... ouch. He actually ripped a shirt I was wearing once and left gouges, but they didn't scar or anything.

Not a dog injury but... one time my same sisters cat was having serious kitty zoomies and ended up scratching my leg REALLY badly. No big deal except I went hiking the next day and somehow got poison ivy in the wound, which got in my bloodstream, which made my leg swell and I had a NASTY looking sore/too gross to describe spot on my leg for about a month.

My worst was breaking up a fight between Ripley and his brother when they were eight months old. Not sure which one got me, but wow did it hurt. Thankfully as soon as the dog realized it was human skin they made contact with they released instantly, but still. It was my fault for not holding them far enough away, but it's hard to break up two seventy pound upset dogs by yourself. Ripley was just defending himself and his brother was the instigator, being possessive of his person.

Other injuries I've had have been minor. A puncture through my knuckle when giving a sharky dog a cookie, a small puncture or two from tug games gone wrong, bruises from general play or tug, and I've also had a few flyball falls that had nothing to do with my dog haha.

Merlin, as my little stalker, is always underfoot. So I trip over him sometimes.

Otherwise? He is incredibly gentle, even mouthing wise ever since he was a baby...I have never had a snagged tooth, nail, mark or anything that I can recall.
I wish I could say the same about Journey haha. The tripping over her part is true (she's the only dog I've ever had who can't grasp the concept of staying out of the way cause things walking into her don't annoy her), but she is far from gentle lol. She's put holes in my favourite sweaters in mouthy play, accidentally punctured my finger and has severely bruised me when she gets too riled up. She's better now, but I still need to remind her to be careful if I let her mouth me in play or when we tug. Such a brat.
