...also a computer nerd. Mostly called a digit head.
Actually I work with several other networked individual contributors and we offer a variety of services that we farm out to one another based on our expertise. The way it works is, one of us gets the contract and shares the work with a percentage added on for the finder. That way we get to share expertise without one of us going it alone and hiring people. Some of the things we do: Software performance specs (systems analysis), ISO 9000 policies and procedures, defect data analysis. process improvement/defect reduction. There is some on-site work, and sometimes presentations, but the bulk of the time is spent working at home. We also use a contract person for finalizing, publishing, binding work. I've had some of the same clients for years, people I knew when I was a corporation rat. The fun part is I get to take only the work I feel like doing most of the time, or no work if I want to smell roses, which I do a lot of in the summer.
I also fix computers that dumb people blow up and configure computers.
I would have never been able to have a Tosca if I had continued working for a company. It's this change in my work method that made it possible. I often come to boards like this as a break on my computer when I am working. I feel much more freedom now, but working on your own requires a lot of discipline or you won't make much money or have any benefits you can't pay for yourself.
