You'd have to either put things on the furniture so the animal can't get up on it.. Or confine the animal. Short of setting 'traps' like pop cans filled with pennies on the furniture.. all you can do is confine. As you can't fix things when you aren't supervising.

That's hardly an awful habit... I let my dog sleep on the couch, loveseat, chairs, and even my bed. My home is her kingdom, and she can sleep where she pleases :)

Another good command is "Off". When they jump up, or try to, say "Off!". If s/he follows the command, give them loads of praise and a treat.

supervision and confinement. you can put the behavior of getting onto furniture on cue and then never give the cue, but in order to break the behavior (which is very self-rewarding) you're going to have to prevent it from ever happening, including when you're not there.

Whats funny is our dogs are allowed on some furniture and not on other things, and they all comply.

We never let Gunnar up on anything, so to this day he won't get on a couch or chair. He's allowed on the bed if we invite him up but he won't stay long. He doesn't even try to get on anything else.

Bruzer is allowed on 1 chair in the family room (MY chair! :( ) and he's allowed on my wife's chair if she's in it.

Daisy is allowed on the couch in the living room and she'll get in my wife's chair (even tho' she's too big for it now). She'll come up on my lap if I'm sitting in my chair. She's allowed on the bed with an invite, tho' she'll worm her way up around 4-5am and lay at the end of it.

None of them are allowed on the leather couch in the family room, and none of them get on it. I don't think we ever did any special training except to never let them on the furniture we don't want them on. If they put a paw up on something off limits, it was "off" and redirection.

Same here...for the most part:D Occassionally our three will try & sneak up onto the forbidden living room furniture, but generally someone is always around to supervise them & if not, they're crated or confined somewhere where they can't get into mischief;) They know they are allowed to sleep on the basement furniture & the beds...and we too use the 'off' command.:)

Same here, too - both for Meg and our old dog Medley. Medley had one couch he was allowed on, and I don't remember it ever being an issue. At first, he was always supervised anyway (puppy), and if he tried to get on something, we'd just tell him off, and then go sit on 'his' couch and invite him up.

Meg is allowed on my bed and one ottoman that I have set up under a window so she can look out. I did the same thing with her; if she got on "illegal" furniture, I'd tell her off, and then invite her onto something she was allowed on.
