You may move this if it should be in “Dog Breeds.†Anyways, I know I’ve been posting a lot, but I tend to forget things and have things move to my head before I get it all out or things come at later times.

Ok, I am going to ask and I don’t want the answer “Whatever breed you think is best,†I want people to give me their opinions on which dog breed(s) they thing I should look into to give me an idea. Now this is strictly your opinion, and I’d like if you could tell me the pros and cons you see in the breed as well as any health issues they may be prone to. I’d also like a link to where you got the information, but don’t just link me to the site because I want it in your words, because I enjoy being complicated! Here is my basic personality overview, as well as physical, lifestyle, and you go off on your merry match-making way!

Personality: I’m pretty laid-back, not to the point of lazy but I do enjoy lounging around the house 9 times out of 10. When I am active, I am get-up and go I will not quit until the task which I am going for is completed or I am unable to stand up anymore. People have been known to call me stubborn, bull-headed, and opinionated and I cannot say I disagree. However, I am very loyal and loving to people I really do trust and would be willing to take a bullet for someone I’m devoted to. I am very shy, not much of a people person as I am lacking in actual social skills and find it difficult to portray the emotions I want. I am down-to-earth, and when it comes to things I value or believe in there is really no changing my mind even though I am normally very open-minded and will listen, certain things I am dead-set in.

Physically: I am 5’4 around 134-140lbs, I am average not overly skinny but not overweight either. I am pretty strong in my upper body, but I am lacking in my lower body strength due to HORRIBLE knees that ache, lock, and swell all the time. My calves are very taunt also making running over distances difficult and at times impossible. I am fairly active when it is nice outside, I do walk everyday no matter what and usually spend an estimated 6 hours outdoors everyday with my dog.

Lifestyle: Laid-back, I do ride and show horses and go on trail rides so I’d need a dog capable of keeping up with me as well as being hardy enough to endure long distances. I own small animals, rats and a bunny, and they are a pretty prominent figure in my life so I’d need a dog (of course sometimes it depends on personality) that’d have a fairly low prey-drive or can be taught to co-exist with small animals. When do leave the house, normally, our dogs are always in tow. Of course I have a Lab, Joansy girl, and would need a breed (once again can also depend on the dogs personality) that isn’t known to be overly aggressive towards other dogs.

You know after I heard you talk about yours, and read about them a bit more - that'd be a breed I would for sure look into. I really think even a Golden mix would be really sweet! :)

Keep an open mind ! My daughters were brought up with them . One has a Golden and one had a Golden who died and still has the Lab , Hunter , his " bro " . She said when Hunter dies, she'll go back to a Golden . There are wonderful mixes on Petfinders . Try to look into their eyes !!! With the right one , you can look into ther souls . That's what sold me on Ollie . What is your zip code ???

Do you want something besides a lab? If a lab is working out well for you, why not get another?

Though personally, I've never been able to say "I want xxx type of dog". I've always fallen in love with a particular mutt, based on personality, not based on breed!

A Lab is nice, but it is also nice to see what other breeds people place you with based off of personality :)

Instead of your personality and physical description, why don't you describe what "the perfect dog" to you would be?

No idea actually, I love my current Lab - but I've loved dogs with different personalties before. I just want a breed idea to look into, one that'd fit my lifestyle and personality. I've never been one to really know much about breeds of dogs, figured people who own the breed might speak out :)

Ok, I really don't like giving breed suggestions because there is still so much individuality throughout the breed, so don't be hard on me! These are dogs that I've met that I think could match with your personality, of course there are going to be dogs in these breeds that WON'T work for you. Here goes (in no particular order):

Collie

GSD

Great Dane

Bernese Mountan Dog

Golden

Anatolian Shepherd

Australian Shepherd

Catahoula

Weimaraner

ihartgonzo

I think a Corgi or a Corgi mix would fit your lifestyle preeetty well! ;) Your personality sounds Corgi-ish. There are many Corgi mixes in shelters, a few Pembrokes here and there, and rarely a Cardigan. I do, however, know of many Cardigan breeders who have very nice adult dogs needing pet homes. Are you looking to rescue or buy from a breeder? I always see Corgi x Border Collies and Corgi x Australian Cattle Dogs in rescue, they're the two Corgi mixes that seem to be "popular". I've met a lot of those mixes and they were awesome... I would love either.

Corgis are very bright, comical, outgoing dogs! They aren't big dogs in little bodies, they're big dogs with little legs. I would recommend a Cardigan (or a lower drive Pembroke mix) if the dog is going to have to be well-mannered around a horse, and small animals, although many Pembrokes do fine with leaving livestock alone... some tend to be nippier than others, but adopting/buying an adult would help you guage their drive. Typically, they have plenty of energy to run around with you all day, but they do not DEMAND daily activity like some breeds (Border Collies, Weimaraners, etc). They do appreciate their people being around and interacting with them as much as possible. Corgis are typically great with people and good, if not a bit sassy, with other dogs. They are short, but they make very able playmates with dogs 5x their size... Fozzie can take on a Mastiff in a wrestling match. They do have a low center of gravity, making pulling easier, but they're also super trainable (when delicious food is involved)! I think Fozzie is the most trainable dog I've ever owned, with the right "motivation", and he is quite Corgi-ish in every other way.

My source is lots of experience with many Cardigans & Pembrokes, and my own Corgi mix. :)

Questions...how do you feel about coat care...are you willing to do what it takes for a high energy dog? Have you researched to make sure you do not support a backyard breeder or a puppy mill? Are you willing to go the distance with a rescue that needs special care for issues? Do you have the personality to handle a stubborn dog? Is barking an issue?

Does Joan socialize well? What breeds doe she lean towards? Victor adores standard poodles...Pepper likes someone just her size. BEcause you want a dog that is special to you, but you are a team and the dog will have to be a part of the whole picture.

Do you let the yard exercise your dog and how much yard to you have or are you one to get out there and walk or run with your dog?

Pointers have crazy energy, they are not for everyone. WOrking dogs need a job to do to be happy and you need to find an outlet for that. PLus dogs do not always fit their breed guidlines. YOu have to be open minded. I have met goldens that were gems and one that would bite you in the behind (why he was named Mooner) when your back was turned. I couldn't handle a barker. My dogs do not bark except a rare exception. ALl that plays into a question like yours.

Hardest part i have with the large breeds is the short lifespan. Nine years just breaks my heart.

How do you feel about barking and howling? How do you feel about digging? I know you need a dog friendly dog but does he need to be good with cats or small children? Are you planning on looking at a breeder or would you rather due a shelter or rescue?
