People suck sometimes.

Sooo this morning I went to Wal-Mart with my mom and my sister, and as we pulled into a parking spot I was looking out my window, and there's a dog in the car next to us. The dog had long black fur and was sitting in the front seat panting. The car was parked right in the sun, none of the windows were open at all. We were all mad, *at the very least* (not that this is much better) they could have left the windows open, I mean the car was unlocked so they can't be too worried about someone stealing something.

My mom wanted to write a note and leave it on their windshield but she didn't know what to say...I'm thinking something along the lines of "leaving a dog locked in a car is just as bad as leaving a baby in one" would have been nice.

What is with people??? Just last week, we were at Pannekoeken, and across the street in the parking lot of a bar, there was a car with 2 dogs in it and the windows weren't open.

It's sad...don't people understand that dogs get hot, too? :(

It makes me sick when I see this... I usually flag one of those "rent-a-cop" guys down, with their flashing lights patroling the wal-mart parking lot :D
People amaze me sometimes, and not in a good amazing way either!

I always keep a leash in the car. I would have been tempted to take the dog out and wait until the owner returned .

I think that rates a 911 call, giving them the tag number of the car and location. I would also stay there and if that animal looks like it is distress, I wouldn't hesitate to break a window...

The time last week when we saw the 2 dogs in the car, we almost called the cops. A few minutes later though the cops actually did drive around the parking lot a few times, I don't know if someone else had called or what, I don't know why else they would go through the parking lot 3 times.

We were kind of hoping we would see the owner(s) before we went in the store, but my sister has an 8 month old baby so we couldn't really just stand around outside and wait. My mom definitely would have said something to them, though.

Ack. I've left my dogs in the car, windows up, when it wasn't very hot out for less than 2 minutes to run into the convenience store for milk or cigarettes or something.

But I just wouldnt' bring the dogs if I planned on going to Walmart or something. You never know how **** busy those places are going to be. And usually when you go there your spending more time than getting what you need and leaving.

I would've waited for the owners to come, although it would probably be better to call animal control. I'm a bitch like that. I'd probably end up being the one leaving in the cop car! ROFL :p

I doubt if you'd get arrested but you'd undoutebly get a ticket.

I don't see how leaving a dog in a car is as bad as leaving a baby in a car.

Human life > Dog life.

That said, it *is* animal abuse. Call animal control and get the dog out if you can. I would take the vandalism ticket to save a dogs life/brain, I'd go to court too and if the judge was an animal lover I doubt if I'd get more than a small fine. Who knows, if the cop was sympathetic they might not even ticket me but the dog owner instead.

I only ever take my dogs in the car for shopping if I'm just running to the store for smokes or something. Any shopping trip greater than 5 minutes (grocery, department store, etc) they stay home.

I disagree... both babies and the dogs are helpless in the fact that they can't get out of the car, or tell you that they're hot. Some people just aren't responsible - I don't think they should have kids or dogs if they aren't. And who are we to judge who's life is greater ? :(

We don't know how long this dog was in the car, or exactly how hot it is, so it's hard to say. . .

Animal control or non-emergency police, with the tag numbers ;)

I agree. I know of someone who did break a window for that very reason. They did NOT get arrested on account of the circumstances. A dog has no more than maybe 10-15 minutes when it that situation.

Who cares if you do get arrested? Big woopie. What are they going to look like when you tell the newspapers all about it?

My dogs have always loved to go with me and if it's not hot, Ollie does too . 5 windows and moon window open just enough to let head out. It really depends on your car and your dogs and the weather. I had a van for 6 months ...hated it !!! Would get too hot for dogs .... so on to a 4 Runner !

If I have my "big" guys with me, I leave my car running with the ac on high. Which usually only happens if I run to the quick stop and take them "bye bye". I can't believe with all of the news stories during the summertime of children and pets that have died from being left in a car, that people don't already KNOW not to do that!

if i had to i would break the window before i would let a creature of any form die a death like that, no matter who's car it is. When we lived on the farm my stepdaughter wanted to play with one of the farm owner's dogs but not the other one. So (she was just a child) she put the dog that bit in the truck without telling anyone. We didn't find the dog until it was too late. I would never get in that truck again, you couldn't even see in the windows for the slime and blood. It is not a fast death, please please people if you see a dog in that situation, do something, anything, even if it means a ticket, money is nothing, saving an animal from an agonizing death means everything.

When i worked city market i would take my breaks out in the parking lot writing down the plate make and model of cars that were stupid enough to leave their dogs out there then finish up my break by climbing the stairs to office to report. Then i would go back and check. It always worked, the owner would come out and the dog relieved of the heat. It is 30 degrees hotter for dogs then it is for people. Heat goes out, not cool air in so leaving the windows cracked makes 0 difference for the animal inside.

I agree Smkie .... people may fault me , but my dogs are NEVER panting when I return . I treat them as I would myself .....what gets me are the small barking dogs who are panting like mad and the windows are just cracked . I'd have Chip in the 4Runner at the grocery , just lying down and waiting .... with windows open ..... next to me a car ( smaller and more heat build up ) . Please HAVE to use their brains !

If the doors are unlocked, see if you can open the door without the dogs going wild and roll the windows down partially . . . And leave a note saying that you did it (no need to leave your name, though) and that the dogs were in distress from the heat.

Or, if you are feeling really wicked, go to the customer service desk with the make and color of the car and license tags and get CS to announce that this car has dogs inside that are in danger from overheating.
