Hi,

I was recently looking into getting my 4-year old dog insurance cause I've heard some stories from friends that were very thankful for getting it because of unexpected accidents to their dogs.

I was looking at PC Financial's pet insurance... the plan that I am interested in only covers "select illnesses"... which are the following: ear infections, eye infections, arthritis, digestive problems, kidney & urinary problems, contagious infectious diseases, seizures, and cancer . It also covers all accidents.

I was wondering if this was sufficient. As in, are these are probably the most common illnesses that a dog would suffer, and thus this plan would be sufficient?

or should I purchase their more expensive plan that covers all illnesses for about $12 more per month?

Thanks.

I looked into this many years ago .... things may have changed. I decided to save what I would have paid monthly ..... over 50 years I'm ahead ....Yes, I may have had to put out $1000 at one point..... but had I paid for insurance it would have averaged about paying out $4800 for a 10 yr old dog. Really , it depends on the breed , the BREEDING , and what problems might come up with the breed . I really don't know today how much insurance will pay towards annual checkups, shots, heartworm and flea control , etc. I think you just have to do the math and decide . Had I had insurance on Chip and I took him in because I thought something was wrong ... would insurance had paid for the visit, Xrays , blood tests , Ultra sounds etc ??? or for my having him PTS and his ashes. ??? It's up to the individual .... but I'd sure read the fine print .

I don't use insurance, but instead put some money into a savings account and have one credit card I keep paid up in case of an emergency.

That way I'm not paying anyone money for coverage of things I don't need or want. In the worst case I'll just have to pay off a balance.

Geez Bobsk ... for real ??? Did they pay for anything ??
When I first got Smokey, it turned out that she had earmites, vet visit and meds. Then she stepped on something and cut her paw and needed antibiotics for that, which caused diarreaha which needed another vet trip and more pills.. Then todays venture... and I have about 11 months to go on the coverage......
Probably by this time, Smokey is thinking that I am a jynx....;)

thanks for the input... the "money into a savings account" idea sounds interesting... i'll keep that in mind as an option...

but my real question was whether or not those "select illnesses" are probably the ones I'll encounter if I do unfortunately encounter an illness with my dog.

so should I get the plan that covers only the "select illnesses" (because the coverage for the "select illnesses" are sufficient) or the next plan up for $12 more per month that covers ALL illnesses (because there are other illnesses that are very common that are not covered by the "select illnesses")?

Thanks

Then why have you had to pay $300 ??? If I read right ... You have the superior at $120 a year which pays for EVERYTHING.... with $50 deductible ....is the deductible with each claim .?? Say I need to get heart worm pills...cost is $80 ... they'd only reimburse $30 ??

I would go for the plan that covers everything.

I pay £120 a year for Bailey and that covers all illness and accidents...death ins, 3rd party liability.....help with costs for advertising if he were lost.

My excess is £75 which is high...........he has only had 1 vet trip that exceeded the ecxess, however this one trip alone amounted to double the Insurance premium.

I didn't say I paid $300, I said the bills I have so far are over $300.

OK .... so you're happy with your plan ?? You've paid out $120 .... and they've paid $300 .... so in 2 months , you're $180 ahead ?? I'm not questioning you , I know my daughter wants insurance on her next pup , so I'm learning.

I am so thankful that I got Toby insurance. He's had some problems with his tummy. Right now, Toby is currently staying at the emergency animal hospital because he had diarrhea and isn't eating or drinking. For a 24 hour stay plus tests and x-rays, the bill is approx. $2000.

Back in June, Toby also had a bad case of diarrhea and his blood work and ultrasound cost $695.

I would pay for Toby's treatments and tests regardless if I had insurance or not. But I am glad that I have it.

That is the main reason I got the insurance. I could see in the two afternoons that I have spent at the Emergency Animal Hospital recently that a $1,000 to 2,000 dollar visit was pretty common if your pet was injured or very sick.
