My stepson's pittie is almost 3 years old and has separation anxiety. He has also had problems with Irritable Bowel Syndrome since he was young. The vet has him on California Natural which seems to agree with his system, but he is so thin. He was gaining a little weight and then had a bout of diarrehia after eating something he shouldn't have and now can't get the weight back on.

My stepson was wondering if there is a supplement he can give his dog to help gain some weight since you can see his ribs and looks very thin.

You might want to try Prozyme. My pup has IBD and allergies and we have had the same problem... once we got him stable and figured out what he was sensitive to we managed to find foods he could eat and liked, but he was skinnnnnnnyyyyyyyyy! Prozyme is a powder you sprinkle on the food and it helps the dog absorb more of the nutrients in the food. It's done really well for us, he's gained some weight and filled in a bit more and his coat has improved a lot, too. You can get it at most pet food stores and they usually have trial sized bottles. We use that combined with some acidophilus to keep his tummy in good shape, and it's made a big improvement.

Has he tried to add sweet potatoes?? I mean fresh sweet potatoes, not just sweet potato dog food........just microwave them and mash them up, add a couple of spoonfuls to each meal.

Orson had terrible gas, I mean the kind of gas that makes 4 adults put the car windows down in sub zero weather, and loose stools for quite awhile. When I switched to homecooking I started to add sweet potatoes to the pot. Now his pooh is firm (not small, but firm at least) and his gas is nearly non existant. When he does let one go, it has nearly no smell to it..........hard to believe, but I swear it's true!

I have since read that it is a great natural reliever in IBD........it could be worth a shot.

Thanks everyone. I will copy these suggestions and pass them on to my stepson.
