I'm trying to decide on getting a toy breed, because I live in the city. I want a smaller dog one preferably one that I can tote around with me and one that can fit in an airline-approved carry which can be about the size of a cat.

any small dog owners out there who can shed some light on toy breeds for me???

{FYI: I will forever be an AIREDALE LOVER!!!!, But write now my family wouldn't be able to care for one properly where I live.:lol-sign: }

what do you mean tote around with you?

would depend on a few things.

grooming, how much time are you willing to spend every day/week/month on the dog? are you willing to have it profeessionally groomed?

excercise, just because a dog is small doesn't mean it doesn't require excercise and this varies breed to breed and dog to dog. how much time each day would your dog be excercised for?

training, some breeds need much more mental stimulation than others. how much training would you provide beyond the "sit' "stay" "drop"?

time with you, how much time each day would the dog be alone?

Like they have said, toy breeds are wonderful companions, but they do vary quite a bit in personality traits. A papillon will be a lot more active than a shih tzu. A maltese is going to require more grooming than a chihuahua. Certain breeds are more along the lines of 'lap dogs' than others. Some breeds are more trainable than others, some more vocal. So what kind of traits do you want that will fit your lifestyle? Size, grooming, temperament, trainability, activity level, etc are important things to consider.

If you love Airdales, I want to mention that a lot of Manhattanites seem to have Norfolk and Norwich Terriers. I have never had one, but they look like solid, but tiny terriers. The owners have assured me that their terriers have terrific, non-hyper temperaments. I don't know if it's true, but they sure are cute.

I think they are something like 10 inches tall and 12 lbs on average. Not in the toy group though.
