Though illegal, dog fighting continues to draw crowds hungry for the sight of blood and the gambling thrill. A law enforcement officer takes us inside this underground world.

June 4, 2007 - The recent discovery of dozens of dogs and dog-fighting paraphernalia at a house owned by NFL superstar Michael Vick has drawn much media attention to this centuries-old blood sport. Illegal in all 50 states, dog fighting still has a loyal underground following. Millions of dollars are wagered annually on the outcomes of these outlaw matches, and the Humane Society of the United States estimates that participants and spectators number in the tens of thousands.

NEWSWEEK’s Steve Tuttle talked to Detective C. R. Beals of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to better understand just exactly what goes on at one of these gory fights. Beals, who has focused on this type of crime for over a decade, has been an expert witness in a number of dog-fighting cases and is his department’s blood sport authority, which also includes cockfighting. As sad and sick as this all is to even read about, I'm glad that its getting media and public attention...I don't think enough people really know what is going on in our communities, our alleys, our basements...(well, not OURS, but you get my point)

Real big here in Boston and I know it is popular in NY thanks to Animals cops NY. I know it still exists lots of places but here in Boston I have talked to detectives who have gone underground into the crowds and chaos of this cruel blood sport. They said it is very dangerous for them to even be "undercover" because if there spot gets blown they risk being blown away themselves. These animals  (meaning people) who are involved in this take it very seriously and there are usually weapons as well as drugs involved  SICK!

Yeah..as much as alot of people complain about the animal cops shows (because I heard that the texas version makes pit bulls look bad or something..or was it Miami?)..but its also a good way to expose people to the reality of what these dogs are faced with on an everyday basis thanks to idiots

It's Miami Dade, they banned pitbulls their. If you watch these shows you must notice that the majority of dogs they rescue are pitbulls or PB mixes! It is ridiculous! NY, adopts and rehabilitates them. It is so sad to see the cruelty these animals go through and alls they want is to be loved like any other dog!

Yeah I don't watch the Miami Dade show anymore since one of their ACOs was spouting off myths, such as the locking jaws, and another one went to somebody's house to tell him to remove his "pit bulls" from the county because they "just snap", all the while the dogs were wagging their tails and trying to love on this guy.

Detroit Animal Cops isn't a very Pit-friendly show either. Their shelter euths them as they get them. I like the Animal Precinct show, though.

It's terrible. In St. Louis, I am a half hour away, the animal control and even the shelters euth the pitbulls as soon as they come in. Tried to find one there and after like the third place, finally asked where they were. I was aghast when they told me. Found Squirat at the flea market.

I know. There was one show where this lady what sitting there with a white pit on the examining table in front of her, just sitting there getting attention. She was like "We have to euth this pit because it's a fighting dog and not safe to put back into public."

Unless they changed it, the animal shelter I used to go to on Seven Hills Dr. adopts out APBTs. Can't remember the name of it, but its in north St. Louis county.
