I always suggest making a sand box for them. Put it some where in the shade and bury treats in the sand (slightly large treats so he does not get a mouthful of sand). Entice him to dig there and praise him when he does. If he is digging some where other than the box then take him to the box and get him to dig there and praise when he does. This requires you to watch him whenever he is outside so he never gets the chance to dig out of the box. If there is one spot he really likes to dig either put the box there or is that is out of the question, put some chicken wire under the dirt there. I have also heard that is you put poop in the holes they dig that they will not dig there any more, this of course also requires that they dig in a specific spot. SO I would make a sand box for him to dig in for sure.

Thanks for the help. A co-worker told me about the chicken wire this week. I just haven't tried it yet. But the sandbox sounds like more fun for Wicket. :D

Most definitely :D The thing about using the chicken wire and such is that the dog still wants to dig and NEEDS to release that energy and if he can't dig he'll find another, and possible worse behavior to expend that energy. That's why getting a sand box works so well. The dog is not being deprived of the natural need to dig plus he'll get treats for going in the box so he'll find it more enjoyable than the yard and choose to dig in the box.

The chicken wire gets buried under the dirt a little ways so the dog does not like the texture of digging there. It also makes it harder to dig there. I still suggest a sand box also if you do the chicken wire.

I used poop for the holes dug around the perimeter of the fence and it worked great. We also have the sandbox to allow them to dig but the poop would keep them from digging in a specific spot (under the gate).
