ichole Allen of East Limestone says she’s had several calls about her foster dog Brownie but no one yet has offered a permanent home.
The News Courier recently published the plight of Brownie, an 8-month-old, female boxer-bulldog mix who wandered up to the Allen home Nov. 11. Allen said the dog had belonged to a neighbor who died.
Chained most of her life, Browning escaped once after her master died and was struck by a car and her back leg broken. According to Allen, who has talked with people in the neighborhood, the dog was never taken to the veterinarian for treatment of her injuries. So one back leg healed in an extremely bowed shape and she walks with an exaggerated limp.
Allen has been keeping the dog in an unused wire kennel since taking her in, but she is allowed to sleep in the house in a crate at night. Allen said the dog is extremely friendly, but “hyper,†and she recommends a home with all adults rather than one with children.
She has vowed to release the dog only to new owners who will get her the proper medical care she needs.
“I had one lady call and she said she would like to have the dog that was in the paper, however, when I checked with the veterinarian she said she used, they did not have her on file,†said Allen.
“There was a real nice lady who contacted me and said she would contact some people she knows with the Humane Society, but she has never gotten back to me. Another lady said she would go through her list of friends.â€
Allen said she found an organization in Huntsville, A New Leash on Life, with which she has communicated. The non-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization works to reduce the number of homeless and unwanted pets by spaying and neutering, provide medical assistance, educate the public and promote humane animal treatment. They also oversee a volunteer foster care program until an animal can be placed in a permanent home.
“They help animals and you can see them at PetSmart on Carl T. Jones Drive in Huntsville every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.,†said Allen. “They have offered to help but I don’t have an actual commitment.â€
Allen said that Brownie is a great dog for the right person.
“She is not meant to stay in a picket fence area, but she is crate trained and goes out in the morning,†said Allen. “She’s a big puppy and likes to chew things. She really needs a permanent home.â€
