My rott, Tank, has been constipated for the last couple of days. And I dont know what to do. My mother in law suggested canned pumpkin, but that made him throw up. I tried googling Dog Constipation, but couldn't find anything that really jumped out at me. This site had some interesting tips, but I'm too scared to try them.

Can anyone give me any advice? I've already scheduled him an appointment with the vet for tomorrow afternoon, but it would be nice to provide him a little relief before then. THank you.

Sorry to hear that TANK is feeling down. My lab, gracie, gets constipated frequently. The vets can't figure it out, but she does. Anyways, I always use Pumpkin, usually that works well for Gracie. But if that doesn't work, then maybe you should try giving her a little bit of milk. When i say a little bit, I mean, a couple of tablespoons. I also heard that mixing some olive oil into the milk would help, but I would double check that.

Did you try surfing around on that Dog Constipation site?? Because I surfed around and found another article called Constipation in Dogs, that had some more helpful tips. If you didn't find it, maybe you should check it out.

But, best advice would be to get TANK to the vet as soon as possible. They may have to give him an enema if it turns out to be just constipation, but there are a handful of things that could be wrong with him. Of course, I'm not a vet, so listen to their advice. Good luck to you and TANK.

My vet has had me give mineral oil orally (3cc per 10 lbs), but I would be most concerned about why the dog is constipated...is there any chance that he has eaten something that could have caused a blockage like string, etc.? Perhaps an x-ray is in order especially if the dog is vomiting. Hopefully your vet will be able to get things flowing again...I just went through this with a cat and it ended up being mega-colon and she may require surgery...good luck!

Ok. Thanks again everyone for your helpful tips and suggestions. I am very happy to report that TANK is doing great. He's up and running around, being his old self once again. I took him to the vet and she preformed an enema, which basically flushed him out (i guess). I don't want to hear about the details. She said that he was just severely constipated and everything is going to be fine. She did a couple of xrays, which turned out to show 'nothing of concern'. She asked me a bunch of questions about his diet and exercise. She believes he got into something that was bad for his system. Possibly, 'people food' or something.

I told her that I was searching the internet trying to find Dog Constipation Tips, and I told her about some of your suggestions. She told me that they would all work just fine.

SlowCharlie - Vet told me a small amount of milk should work and/or mineral oil. and Yes. I did see that page.

CharliesMommy - the vet said scrambled eggs should work.

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to help me (and TANK) out.

Glad your boy is feeling better! Don't even want to know how the vet did an enema on a dog!!! I'm pretty sure Charlie would tear an arm off if such a thing were tried on him!

In future, can try a natural means to get your pet to go poo. Good old Vit C!
When we give them Vit C above their capacity to absorb, the excess goes out of the system via loose stool.....Vit C in excess do not harm our pets, just get flushed out. Can try it next time.....u can use Vit C (those used for humans we can use for dogs as well) , try half or quarter tab first, observe if dog have loose stool....still no effect, increase the dosage the next day.

May want to give yur pets more fruits and vegetables in their diet to prevent future onset. (remember, NO GRAPES or CITRUS fruits or NIGHT SHADES vegetables)
