Normally I wouldn't think an Aussie would need a jacket, but winter is coming and my commute to work is very long and involves standing outside for sometimes a very long time as well. We get some super cold temperatures, and I want to make sure I have a coat of some sort for her just in case.

Last year I put Dance's Chilly Dogs coat on her, but the neck was tight even then, nevermind now. Shedrow makes a nearly identical coat to Chilly Dogs' Great White North that I thought of ordering (for a much better price), but again, I am probably going to have the same issue. Those types of coats seem more meant for narrow necked dogs, and Journey has quite a bit of substance to her. I guess I could get one anyway and just cut off the extra neck part so it doesn't come high on her neck, but that would involve finding someone to alter it properly because I am no good with sewing and fixing things like that. Although I think Dance got the sighthound version of that coat because her sizing was weird... so maybe a regular coat like that would fit Journ. I dunno.

Basically what I am looking for is a coat that covers the back and chest but doesn't come high up on the neck. And one that has a waterproof/weather resistant shield so that she doesn't get all wet. All of the coats I've been able to find so far just have a strap on the front of the chest and a strap across the belly, but none (in her size) have anything that covers the whole chest. The reason this is important to me is because 1) I think covering the chest helps with warmth, but 2) the buses and trains can be very slushy and I'd rather the coat get gross than her fur cause she can't be super filthy at work.

We have some RC Pets coats at work that I was going to get her, because the small dog version was exactly what I was looking for, but then when I found one in her size it was made slightly different (no chest part).

My other solution was to get her a Ruffwear Cloud Chaser and then put a rain coat over top on wet days, but it restricts her movement because of her build.

Anyone know where I can find what I'm looking for? I wouldn't think it would be that difficult a task, but apparently it is!

My only suggestion was going to be ruffwears coats. They do keep the dog extremely warm though! Maybe if you got the next size up for her it wouldn't restrict her movement and you can have the body altered to fit better? Or have the legs altered in the correct size to fit.

I have the cloud chaser and the climate changer, and they fit all of my dogs. And they were bought for Enzo. So there's some stretch and give to them. They wouldn't fit Jones comfortably once his chest drops, but he's got a nice thick coat anyway. Also, we don't stand at freezing bus stops ;)

I like either Foggy Mt coats (shaped like a horseblanket, and they will do custom alterations) for waterproofness, or Doodlebug Duds "Doodleneck" pullovers for warmth (will also do custom sizing)

I just bought the new Shedrow coats for my guys, and depending on the sizing I find the necks a little wide for a narrow necked dog like my greyhounds. It was fine so I bought them each one but if I was having one made specifically for my sighthounds I know they would have been made with a narrower neck. I also wasn't too worried because chances are my dogs will be wearing something under those coats when it gets really cold. They're not nearly warm enough for a sighthound in the dead of a Canadian winter. Would probably be enough for a heavier coated, less slim built dog though. Do you have a Greenhawk anywhere around you? I never buy anything for my dogs without trying it on them or having it custom made to their measurements, so I took my guys in to try these coats on.

If you wanted I can post a picture of them in their Shedrow coats so you can see how much room there is in the neck on a slender neck.

EuroDog Designs is having a sale on raincoats, including the Hurtta outdoor overall - might be worth a look.

My suggestion would be the Hurtta jacket. They have the chest protection without having too much of a neck.

The new Shedrow style didn't fit Quinn at all, unfortunately. I think it fit Dally well though, and if anything her neck is short & solid!

Thanks, everyone! I hadn't seen some of those before.

Krissy, unfortunately we don't. It's hard to find good dog coats locally, so not much of a chance to try things on. I've always ordered online but just measure carefully. But it's a lot easier to buy coats for my Dobermans since they're bodies are more suited to most coats. It does seem a little silly to get a coat for an Aussie, but she really doesn't have a thick coat of her own at all (yet) and I know that with as cold as it sometimes gets in the evening on our way home, she'll very likely get too cold without.

This is Pip's coat:

Maisy and Squash have this coat that covers their whole bellies (with gender-appropriate pee-holes), for mushing (I almost never use it for Squash since, as you can see, coats fill him with terrible woe):

Haha! Oh, Squash. That has got to be the saddest yet most hilarious picture ever.

And thanks! I was just looking at Pip's camping thread and trying to figure out what kind of coat he was wearing.
