Ummm...I'm sorry. No they don't. The breed originated in the USA. Neither of the sites you referred to say the breed originated in Canada. Chessies came from an ENGLISH shipwreck with two NEWFIES off the coast of MARYLAND who were bred to many LOCAL dogs including SPANIELS, SETTERS, HOUNDS. Just because the forefathers of the breed were Newfies, does not mean the breed originated in Canada. If this were the case, this would mean the the Boston Terrier is English because it came from English Bulldogs and English White Terriers. Just like the Chessie, the Boston Terrier is all American, as the breed was DEVELOPED here in the US. You should probably do a bit of homework before writing these breed descriptions.
Per American Chesapeake Club and the AKC:
"Equally proficient on land and in the water, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed along the Chesapeake Bay to hunt waterfowl under the most adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during the course of many strenuous multiple retrieves."
From the American Heritage Dictionary:"A hunting dog of a breed developed in the United States, having a thick short wavy coat ranging from dark brown to tan in color and known for its skill in retrieving game from water."
From www.i-love-dogs-com: "Country/Region of Origin: United States "
From www.5stardog.com: "Family: gundog, retriever
Area of Origin: United States
Date of Origin: 1800s
Original Function: water retriever"
From www.thepetprofessor.com: "In 1807 a British ship was shipwrecked off the coast of Maryland. Two of the survivors were the ship's dogs - named Sailor and Canton, a male and female who proved later to be excellent water retrievers. These dogs were bred with some of the local sporting dogs and a new breed developed from this hearty stock."
From www.Wikipedia.com: "The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a breed of dog that was developed along the Chesapeake Bay to hunt waterfowl under adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during the course of many strenuous multiple retrieves. Country of origin: United States"
From www.mdarchives..st.md.us: "A working dog bred to recover waterfowl for hunters, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is one of only a few breeds actually developed in the United States. Nonetheless, the history of this dog is unclear. Legend tells of an English vessel shipwrecked off the coast of Maryland in the early nineteenth century. Among the survivors were two young dogs of a Newfoundland breed. Supposedly bred to local coonhounds, they evolved into the present-day Chesapeake Bay Retriever."
From www.mdkidspage.com: "In 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, named after the famous bay region of the breed's origin, was declared the official dog of Maryland. A working dog bred to recover waterfowl for hunters, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is one of only a few breeds actually developed in the United States. Retrievers excel in field and obedience trials. These dogs are known for their versatility, strength, endurance, and devotion."
