Hey guys, me and a friend will be moving into an apartment together, we're both dog lovers and are willing to do our research before getting a breed. What I am wondering is what do YOU guys recommend as a dog for an apartment? Many people say a Shih Tzu, but I really don't like how they look ( I know , I know don't judge a book by the cover, but still )
Would a Rat Terrier be a wise choice?
American Eskimo?

I have been to multiple websites and each one says something else... So I'm wondering what my fellow Dog Owners think...

We would prefer to have a Medium Sized dog, but a Small one would be alright too... not Toy though

Thanks !!!!;)

I read up and apparently these dogs do well in apartments;
*Pug
*Schnauzer.
*Welsh corgi
*West highland white terriers
*Whippet
*Cocker spainel,If you want a medium sized dog.
*Boston and border terriers.
*Dachscund(sausage dogs)
*Boxers,again for a bigger breed.

I have not met a Rattie or Eskie who wasn't vocal. Vocal in the almost annoying sense. They are awesome dogs, but I wouldn't really want to live next to someone who had one, going off what I have seen and researched about their 'speech' being so, well, straightforward, if you will.

I love Pugs as an apartment breed. A daily walk will suffice, even if they are in the country. They love to play, but not so much as to tire you out (when they grow up, anywho, Puglets...Pug puppies...are energetic as all get out).

You could also consider a bulldog or a retired racing greyhound.

But to be honest, pretty much ANY breed of dog can be an apartment dog. It all depends on how much exercise and training you're willing to give it. I had an active husky/rott mix in an one bedroom apartment, and he was fine. But he did require a 2-mile morning walk and a 2-hour session at the dog park every evening to keep him happy.

Keep in mind that you may end up moving eventually. It would be easier to find an apartment that will allow a 4 lb chihuahua than one that will allow a 150 lb great dane.

Agreed with what Gemp said about dog sizes when you go to move... most places will allow small to medium sized dogs... large dogs not so much.

Dogs that typically tend to be yappier are also not the best choice as your neighbours can here you and can get rather annoyed with dogs who bark all day long while your at school/work.

Smaller dogs also take up less physical space in your apartment. Keeping a big dog is like having a whole extra person (plus they tend to run around more!).

Terriers can be a good Apt dog, I would aim for the retired show ones tho. cause a 14 month old wire fox terrier is enough to drive you up a wall, and you can not tire them out. but an older 5-6 retired dog, all they need is a couch and there happy.

Also retired Grays would be wonderful!!

From the sounds of it you might be a first time dog owner as well? or not?

I have taken out the ones I would not recommend above,
mostly for barking reasons, even dachscunds and Schnauzers
have been known to be barkers if improper training is done,
but that happens with all dogs.
I second a retired greyhound as well.

Rat Terriers need a lot of exercise and attention.

and American Eskimo is a good apartment dog, but they're kind of difficult for first time dog owners.

i'd go for a small/medium mixed breed dog.

a cocker spaniel might be a good choice.

bulldog was a good suggestion, and retired greyhound is a great suggestion! They're quite, don't need a ton of running around, and quite well behaved. of course, you'll need to find an apartment that doesn't mind a larger dog.

Any dog can be kept in an apartment if the owner is dedicated enough to make sure that it gets proper physical and mental stimulation.

Pugs are great for an apartment.

Also, Petfinder and shelters have older dogs, usually mixed breeds, who are quiet and will not require a lot of room. You might want to go take a look at some local shelters and see what they have. It's possible that the perfect dog for your situation is there waiting for a home.

They have a tendancy to be extremely vocal!
I would say not the best choice for a first-time owner (if you are one).
They need lots and lots of physical/mental stimulation and you must adore being covered in dog-hair :D

I would say a pug is the ultimate apartment dog :)

I vote for the retired racing greyhound...they're quiet, they need a short run/long walk twice a day, and then they're couch potatoes...if you live where it's cold, be careful though - they are not super tolerant of cold weather...

Good luck!

I'm surprised no one has said chihuahua. We have a chihuahua / shih tzu mix, and he would be a perfect apartment dog. We happen to live in a house, but the part of the house Leo is allowed to visit is smaller than our old apartment was. He runs around the family room here and does just fine. Doesn't bark, either, unless his water dish is empty.

I'm with Gemp.... I have heard that retired racing greyhounds are FABULOUS apartment dogs. They are pretty quiet and are couch potatoes when they are indoors. Plus they are in desperate need of a loving home :D

Agreed entirely. I have a pup who I thought was Collie/GSD but looks more and more like a Border Collie by the day/is getting insanely energetic. A lot of time outside in the morning, evening, and a dog walker who takes him out twice a day has kept him under control.

I did however, crate train him at my parents place while they were off in Europe, which allowed me to make his noise, and make his noise he did.

Greyhounds are a bit on the large (well, very tall) side, which might be problematic when you try to get someone to rent to you. Have you thought about a Whippet? Lovely little dogs with quiet personalities.
