A Florida Senate committee passed a bill yesterday (3/4) that has dog owners contacting their local senators.
The previous law prohibited municipalities from regulating breed specific dogs known to be aggressive.
The proposed change would reverse that law and allow communities to ban specific dog breeds.
Many dog lovers oppose this bill because they say the focus needs to be on educating dog owners, not banning the breed.
Sonya White, Executive Director of LCHS says,
"The way to solve the problems that the legislature's trying to address is really by addressing responsible pet ownership, making sure that there's safety involved when people have larger breed dogs or even small to medium size breed dogs. Awareness and education is the key for safety for humans and animals."
This is not the first time this bill has been proposed to the Senate, but it has now gone a lot further than ever before.
