What do you think are some of the down sides of a dog who barks excessively, Some people are of the view that a dog that barks at a lot of things is a good watchdog, do you think this is true? what to you think about that?

Downsides?

Noise complaints from neighbors with possible intervention from AC.

A dog that barks excessively is likely a sign of something not right - boredom, needs not being met, anxiety, etc. Although there are some dogs that simply enjoy talking.

As for watchdogs, a good watch dog will only bark when there's a real issue. For a dog to bark at anything and everything doesn't serve well. A good watchdog should know when to say "Hey there's someone here!" and when not to. I don't need to be alerted to the neighbors across the street, a squirrel running through the yard, blowing wind. That much alerting is likely going to get ignored as an alert. A dog who is usually quiet and then alerts when a stranger is approaching his house is much more effective.

Dogs that bark excessively end up being ignored, so if someone were to break into their owners homes and the dogs would be barking none of the neighbours would bother checking because they would be so used to hearing the dogs barking.
Second scenario is that someone will soon call animal control and press charges.
Third, someone might get upset enough to throw poison in the dog's yard...who suffers..? The dog of course.

My dog does not really bark too much. I consider this a good thing, because when he does bark I have to assume it is more for a reason. Sometimes I wish that he barked more randomly, but it is probably better this way.

He does have this habit about barking out the sliding glass door at night. Not sure what he thinks he sees or hears.
